WWYD? Teeth & Sleep

DD has been sleeping terribly.

It started 8 weeks ago when we switched formula and then 6 weeks later realized that her frequent night wakening were from her irritated tummy.  She slept good for a week and now the night wakening are back. She IS cutting 2 upper teeth and has 2 more upper teeth that appear to be coming in.

Do I continue to get up with her every 3 hrs and feed her? Or do I try to Ferber her and stop the night wakening?  She does get motrin before bed the last few nights but it hasn't helped.

WWYD? Continue to get up with her, feed her, hold her, etc. Or try to get her to sleep through the night again (she used to sleep 12 hrs straight)

Re: WWYD? Teeth & Sleep

  • You are not supposed to use Ferber when there is teething, illness, etc. going on. It does suck but I would continue to comfort her when she gets up, give Tylenol for pain, and yes give her a bottle if she wants one.

  • When Ds is cranky from teething, I give him Gripe Water.  It says to give 2 tsp, but 1 tsp usually is all he needs.

  • I would get up because she is in pain and not just getting up for no reason.
  • Many of the sleep training books and articles I've read have said that they do not count teething in with other sickness when it comes to CIO. I think I would have trouble letting DS CIO if I knew he was in pain, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. I'd go with your gut...is she crying because she's in pain? Hungry? Or has it just become a habit after so many weeks of poor sleeping?  If it's the first two, I'd keep comforting, but if it's the latter, I'd sleep-train.
