How quickly to antibiotics kick in?

It seems as though we've finally gotten B on the right form of antibiotics...how quickly can I expect to see a turnaround in her behavior and for the fever to break?

Can I also just say how bad it SUCKS to see your child in a miserable heap (for lack of a better word) and not be able to do anything about it, except wait for the motrin to kick in?  Crying

  • Since we're old hats at this now (5th ear infection), you should notice a change in a couple days. FWIW - our pedi says to come back if she doesn't start to improve after 3 days. What is B on?

  • She's on amoxycilin(sp)...they gave her the liquid version which they flavored with bubblegum flavoring and she HATED it.  We had to force her to take the first dose and the 2nd dose, she threw up what little amount we got in her mouth.  They gave us the chewable pills and we crush them and add them to yogurt.  So far that's worked.

Ugh...a couple of days??   Her fever started on Monday....

  • You might see an improvement sooner - D was on amox for her first ear infection. Since B doesn't seem to have that, it's hard to say. Fever of unknown origin is tough. Did they give you follow up instructions? And yes - it totally sucks out loud when they are sick. Talk about feeling helpless. :(

  • Carla - IMO it is an ear infection...her Pedi originally said sinus infection b/c of some lingering nasal congestion but she didn't get a good look at her ears b/c she was fussing and squirming so much.  She's been pulling on her ears today...and  think sinus infections in babies are kind of unusual....

So anyway...I am really hoping the amox knocks it out....this really blows!

  • Liz - I could have written that myself from when Ellie was sick in Nov!  It is awful!  Ellie was so sickly in the office that she got two shots of something I've forgotten and then we started the augmentin the next day.  It still took a day or two :(

Glad you were able to get to some meds she'll take!

  • I was always told by my pedi and the pharmacist to allow a few days for the amox to work -- up to 3-4 days.  Unfortunately it is not a fast-acting antibiotic.
