Babies: 6 - 9 Months

S/O If you had a c-section

What factors led to having one?

I was 10 days late with DD and had not progressed at all. No dilation, no effacing, she didn't drop...nothing. Also, she was estimated to be 8 lbs 10 oz. The doctor warned me of the risk of having her vaginally-- I'm a very petite woman and he thought the risk of DD;s shoulders not fitting was going to be pretty high. But I really wanted to try for vaginal.

The induced me with cervadil at 10 pm, water broke at 11 pm. I labored till 8 am the next morning I was at 4 cm but she wasn't dropping at all, despite me sitting up, walking, etc.  Dr said I could start pitocin to see what would happen, but that it was likely that her head was too big and we could just go ahead with the cs if I wanted to. At that point, I was in a ton of pain and was very scared about her not fitting so I said just do the cs.

DD was 9 lbs 1 oz and the doctor said there was no way she was going to fit and that we made a good decision with the cs. I'm glad I got to feel labor, and at times I wish I had the pushing experience, but then I remember that pain and I'm ok with the fact that I didn't push her out :)   Overall I loved the cs experience. Recovery was easy for me, etc.

Re: S/O If you had a c-section

  • I had a c-section because DD was breech. I had tried everything to get her turned, except a version. I originally scheduled it for when I was 41 weeks in hopes of her turning, but when I went for an NST on my due date (which I was sent to the hospital for since my Dr. wasn't in), they checked my cervix and I was 3cm dilated. They said I should do my c/s that night so as not to risk a cord prolapse.

So DD was born on her due date, and though I had a very easy recovery, I was upset to have missed out on a vaginal birth experience. I am hoping for a VBAC next time around.

  • I was induced at 39 weeks due to baby size.  Cervadil for 12 hrs then pitocin for about 14ish.  No meds at all, but I was at 4cm and stayed at 4cm for like 6 hours.  I had internal monitors and the nurse calculated my contractions, told me that most people fully dialate and deliver with LESS intense contractions than I was having.  I was wheeled for a c-section cause I couldn't progress and it turns out that he was turned in the canal a little bit so his head wouldn't drop all the way.  His head was 37.5cm around and he was 9lbs 5oz, so my vag totally didn't miss anything it could actually have handled.

The c-section experience was traumatic and devastating for me.  I had a panic attack through the entire thing.  I healed well but my inscision was leaking yellow and pink/blood colored fluid 2 weeks later (and when I say leaking, I mean gushing.  it soaked my underwear, pants, floor, socks, etc.).  It was not an infection, it just happens sometimes to some people.  Fun.

  • My water broke at 3am. By 3pm, I still hadn't progressed, so they started pitocin.

DD did not react well at all - every time they tried to up the dosage, she would go into distress. They even tried "refilling" my water to get her to move; no luck.

At 7pm her heart rate sky rocketed and I was immediately taken in for an emergency section. Turns out the cord was wrapped around her neck.

  • Started having contractions at 38w6d.  Went to the hospital and I was 4cm dilated.  Admitted me at 9pm and gave me pitocin.  I made it to 7cm, my water broke when my nurse checked me and then I went back to 6cm.  My morning nurse kept changing my position, turned down my pitocin to try and make more progress, but I never did.  His heart rate also kept fluctuating whenever I would have a contraction.  So at 9am my doctor was called and she ordered the c-section.  My LO was born at 10:02am.

Oh, and his heart rate was fluctuating because the cord was bunched in front of him.

    OMG that sounds just aweful!

I was induced due to my white cell count being elevated. I was having prodromal labor for weeks. OB admitted me on Mon night and monitored. Couldn't get Cervidil/Cydotek b/c contrax were too regular and that it would put too much stress on the baby. Tues morning they hung the pit. at 8a, got a shot of Nubaine at around 9 or 9:30. They lost the heartrate a couple times so I had an internal monitor put in. Then his heartrate dropped, they had my on my right side, then my left side and on all 4's. They finally got it back up but by then the OB called for a c/s and within 15 min he was born via the trap door.

ETA: I was induced the night before and he was born on his due date.

  • DD was breech and I was a bad canidate for a version (first time mom, anterior placenta). We opted to schedule a c-section for a Thursday.

I started contracting and losing my MP on Tuesday. OB said not to come in unless contractions became regular or my water broke. Labored all day on Wednesday (still not regular)....then at 8:30 PM my water broke! When we got to the hospital I was already 4 cm and contractions were less than 3 minutes apart. They brought up a portable ultrasound to verify she was still bottoms down because at that point they were going to let me go natural if she had turned, she was still very much breech so Ky was born exactly 12 hours before my scheduled c-section via an emergency c-section.

  • At my 36 week appointment we scheduled my c-section for 38 weeks.  That morning my OB still gave me the option of trying for a vaginal delivery, but I was too nervous that once I delivered baby A that baby B would flip around the wrong way.  I absolutely did not want to recover from 2 procedures.  My recovery was pretty non-eventful.

  • With DS1 I went into labor 9pm on a Sat.  Went to hospital 7pm on Sun.  By 4pm on Mon I was stuck on 8cm.  Baby and I were getting a low grade fever, and the doc told us that he would allow me to continue like that for 2 more hours and then I would have to have a c/s.  Or he gave me the option to have a c/s then.  I never wanted one from the beginning, but since the doc said I probably would not progress I decided to go ahead with the c/s.  It was a good thing too, because DS1 was stuck, more or less, and I was told that he would never had made it out other than via c/s.

    DS2 was planned c/s.

  • DD was breech. She was actually head down until 36w5d (that's the day I felt her turn transverse and then she turned the rest if the way). My doctor scheduled me for a c/s for 39w2d. He didn't want me to go into labor on my own but did an u/s that morning to make sure she was still breech, and she was.

  • I was patiently waiting for DS to come on his own and the OB ordered a routine fluid check at 40w 3d and to all of our surprise he was breech. We were supposed to try a version on the morning before the c/s but my water broke 10 mins before my alarm was set to go off.

  • With my first I had to be induced because of pre-e. After 12 hours of labor and during pushing Luke got stuck (We could even see his head) and I had a placental abruption. We both almost died but we had an emergency on the spot c-section from a wonderful doctor that saved us. Turns out because of my tailbone I can't push a baby bigger than 3 lbs. out. Obviously I had a repeat with Sawyer.

  • I was a week overdue with DS and my water was diminishing so the doctor decided to induce.  I went in and was started on pitocin at 10am.  By 3pm I was 5cms and in a lot of pain so I requested an epidural.  The epi was administered and DS did not react well to it.  His heartrate dropped and then they could no longer find the heartbeat so they did an emergency c-section.  I'll spare everyone the awful and terrifying details since DS and I are both perfectly fine and my recovery was a piece of cake.  Our next will be a scheduled c-section and hopefully uneventful and drama free :)

  • DS turned breech and we found out at 39 weeks 4 days.  I had a scheduled c-section the next morning.

DD was also breech so repeat c-section for me.

Both of my recoveries were good.  Recovery from the second one was much easier.

  • I knew all along DS was breech but every doc I asked told me he was head down just not "engaged" in my pelvis. Low and behold, my water broke and I went into L&D. They did an ultrasound and there he was, head in my ribs.

  • I was induced at 41wk4days. Labored for 25 hours and pushed for 3 hours but DS would not budge. They tried 3 times to use the vacuum. Had me in every position three different doctors could think of to get him out, but still nothing. Went in for the c/s, but felt everything they were doing so I had to be under general anesthesia. This of course broke my heart & scared me. I waited almost 42 weeks to find out if we were having a boy or girl & I never got to here those words or see my son as soon as he was born. The upside was that I had a really great recovery! The irony was that the doctor who performed my c/s was the same one who had reassured me at one of my appointments that the baby was only going to be 8 1/2lb max & I would have no problem delivering!!

  • I had a perfectly textbook labor and should have delivered vaginally. But DD turned mid labor and her head was now hitting my pelvic bone instead of descending straight into the birth canal. I pushed for 3 hours and she didn't budge. Afterwards the OB said I could have pushed till next Tuesday but she wasn't coming out.

  • I laboured all the way to 10cm and pushed for just over two hours until my doctor finally got there and confirmed that DS was transverse and a c/s was necessary.

  • My boys were breech early and not moving. Honestly, I had no desire for a vaginal birth. And after reading all the stories of pain, tearing, hours, mess, loss of dignity, etc, my thoughts are confirmed. I had a 4lb baby, and he was huge! No way I would have wanted to push him out. I had braxton hicks from 20 weeks on, so I got a small taste of labor. Anything beyond that? No thanks.

  • I found out DS was breech at 32 weeks from a growth u/s. He never flipped and I opted out of a version (OB didn't think it would be successful). So we scheduled a c-section at 39 weeks. I was disappointed at first but my recovery went super well. DS was a pretty decent sized baby (8 lbs 10 oz) so who knows if I would have ended up having a c-section anyway if he hadn't been breech.
