Diet Plan Help

SO and I are both getting ready to both go full force on a diet to really help me get these last 20 lbs of baby fat gone and him to lose a little. He wants to do no carb which I dont know if I can really make it thru. Any great diets you girls did or if you did low or no carb any advise would be so much appreciated. TIA

Re: Diet Plan Help

  • I actually LOST weight while pregnant thanks to my low-carb GD diet. Really, the most important thing was portion size. When you look at your plate, it should be half veggies, then protein, and then carb. Protein is really important for feeling full. I totally abandoned my GD diet the MINUTE DD was born, but we are going back to it now.

  • You know, currently I am attempting to limit my refined carbs.  I am eating fruit and dairy when I am hungry instead of breads or crackers.  It is still early, so we'll see!  GL!
  • I think no carb is too restrictive - not to mention expensive.  An alternative to that is no carbs at dinner.  My friend did that and lost 10 pounds.  Otherwise, I'm trying to change my mindset to think that food is fuel.  It hasn't been easy but I'm hoping the effects will last longer than the last time I tried to lose weight - I think I started gradually gaining it back almost immediately :|

    Good luck!

  • I gained 50 lbs while I was pregnant and was able to lose all of it, plus a little bit more by cutting back on certain items and working out every single day, sometimes twice a day.

If I were you, I would limit any "bad" carbs.  Stay away from the starchy whites.  Whenever I do this, I always notice a difference.  If you are going to eat "carbs," make sure it is always whole grain.  I tried to stay away from all bread and crackers, but if I absolutely had to have some, I would make sure it was whole wheat.  I ate a lot of whole wheat pasta.  I also ate a lot of ricecakes to take the place.  Ricecakes w/ peanut butter, hummus, salsa, etc.  I think if you are mindful and try to eat all of the different food groups and stay away from the packaged foods.  Eat natural - think eggs, greek yogurt, veggies, fruits, fresh meat.  My two fave snacks are almonds and hot green tea.  Recent studies showed almond snackers lost more belly fat!  Another secret of mine is chocolate milk.  Again, recent studies show that choc milk is a better recovery drink after a workout.  It helps your metabolism and helps your body recover. Drinking 80+ oz of water a day and keeping a food and workout journal helped me reach my goal weight!  Good luck, you can do it!!

  • Whole foods!  Meaning limit or cut out all processed foods - basically the center of the grocery store.  Eat a lot of salads - make your own dressing.  If you eat pasta, switch to whole grain, make your own sauce.  Tons of fruit/veggies - don't eat out as much.  Switch your cereal to oatmeal or some other less processed grain.  And really try to avoid sugar - except for in desserts - so you can actually enjoy your sugar.

  • Right after I had DS, I did strict calorie counting, and I was also attempting the P90X workouts. I had never done anything like that before (unfortunately I didn't do it for long..) but it worked. I lost maybe a few pounds before I got pregnant again, and it was all out the window.

For breakfast, I ate cottage cheese, an avocado, and an egg white omelet.

Lunch, salad with kidney beans, feta cheese, and chicken.

Dinner, veggie burger and baked beans.

In between those meals, I was having some type of health bar (cant remember, protein or fiber..)

As long as I had the bar in between, I wasn't feeling totally starved between meals. I mean, each meal really didn't make me feel full enough by itself. But that's just me.

  • Wow soooo many great tips. I already eat only whole grain pastas and breads but need to cut out the crap food. I really think with a mixture of what you all mentioned plus really restricting my late night carbs I can easily do this. I finally pulled out the wii fit last week and got started on that and my workout dvds and already dropped 5 lbs! Next trip to the grocery store I will have no frozen foods, sugars, and white products. I cant wait to look fit again and am so ready.

The chocolate milk I didnt know about but LOVE!! Thanks again

  • Plain old calorie counting.  I use My Fitness Pal, it's a great supportive community and they give you calorie intakes based on your goals so it takes the guesswork out.

  • Go South Beach diet. The principles are basically only eating whole foods and lean protein. Lots of veggies and some fruit. It is a low carb diet, but really more of a life style. It essentially allows for good carbs like brown rice and whole grain breads ect. It's a good read and was developed by a Cardiologist.

  • Definitely WW online. I gained 50 lbs during my pregnancy. I lost all but about 15 lbs after delivery and have since lost 35 lbs on WW. They have changed their system so it now includes counting carb points. The recipes are almost all amazing and I feel better because I can eat pizza without feeling bad that I had carbs. I would check it out. It's definitely not a way to lose weight fast, but then again it's not healthy to lose more than 2 lbs a week anyway. GL :)
  • What works for me & always has is just portion control & only having healthy options in the house.  Lots of big salads, oatmeal, greek yogurt with fruit, fish/seafood for dinner, whole grain pasta when we do pasta, healthy snacks, etc.  I eat small portions throughout the day (like 5 normally).  Also, for me diet alone is only half the battle. If I don't work out I am skinny but not tight/toned.  Good luck!

Edit:  By the way, no carb makes no sense to me b/c fruit & veggies are carbs so what would one eat on a no carb diet?  Meat & dairy?  That is not healthy at all IMO.

Also, we just eat clean.  By that I mean fresh produce, fresh meats, little/no packaged foods, etc.  I really feel SO much better day to day when I eat this way.

I agree about the no carb completely and will not be doing that approach! Limiting yes and only healthy ones.
