What you put on your pasta? Just wondering, my dad's family is all italian and this was a topic of conversation recently. Our family called it one thing and my future BIL called it another!

My family is all Italian (Sicilian, on my mom's side) and they call it sauce. I've heard other Italian families (perhaps from other regions of Italy) call it gravy.

future brother in is Sicilian as well and calls it sauce. My father's family (dad is first generation american) calls it gravy! My Nonna would flip out if someone ask her for sauce, she would say she doesn't make sauce and if you want sauce go down the street to market LOL!

I'm pretty specific and say whatever I'm adding such as alfredo or marinara. If I'm speaking in more general terms I'd say sauce. Is that what you're asking?

I was more referring to red sauce/gravy. I know some people say if has meat in it is gravy but not it is sauce. Just curious!

At my house gravy is that nasty concoction of flour, butter, and chicken or beef drippings that people put on their potatoes.

Sauce is the stuff that goes on my pasta.

I Am from a very Italian neighborhood, work with 99% of Italians and the what to call it debate happens at least 10 times a year when some Irish ( just generalizing) person calls it sauce. If it was made with meat it is gravy. If it has no meat it is sauce.

That is exactly what my father says! We never make it without meat so we never call it sauce!

We also refer to by what kind were eating like spaghetti, ziti, bow ties, etc. My father's mother is from right out side Calabria and his father is from Laviano

I am 1st generation Italian-American and I have spent many days of my life in Italy with family. Sauce = red stuff. Gravy = brown stuff.

It is sauce - absolutely NOT gravy. Ugh - that drives me nuts! My grandfather is from Italy and calls it sauce. My aunts MIL is from the italian part of the city and insists it is gravy. Gravy is brown and goes over meat.

I switch back and forth. if it's homemade, then I call it gravy. If it came from a jar, like Prego, it's sauce. Growing up my mom always called it gravy and still does.
