It's all starting...beginning with bedrest

Well here we go...had my 37wk appt today.  I'm not dilated, 50% effaced and at -2 station.  BUT my BP was high, 140/100.  My dr was immediately talking induction, which was precisely what I was trying to avoid.  She sent me for an NST and to have my fluid levels checked.  Everything was fine (was even having contractions I couldn't feel) and by the end of my NST my BP was back down to 120/82.  My dr had taken blood last week and the week prior because my BP had been higher than normal, but it wasn't officially high at that point.  And my bloodwork was normal for those two weeks, no pre-e.

So now I'm home resting.  She told me I can't go back to work so trying to tie up loose ends from home, plus I need to sort out what needs to happen with HR so this doesn't affect my 12 weeks PP maternity leave.  I'm kind of in shock.  Of course I'd be more in shock if I were being admitted to the hospital tonight to be induced, but still.  I had no idea yesterday would be my last day at work!

Because I'm not dilated at all yet I'd really like to still see if I can keep this baby cooking a little longer, even tho I'm full term.  I'm obviously not mentally ready, but I don't think I'm physically ready yet, either.

Any seasoned bed-resters out there have any advice for me?  I'm technically on the couch, but still...I think I'm going to be bored by tomorrow.

  • My 37 week apt sounds about like yours. Swelling plus BP was 150/90. He immediately started talking induction and sent me for blood work. Since my blood work did not show toxemia I am now on bed rest. I am 1cm dilated and our goal is 39 weeks. I have to go in 2-3 times a week now for monitoring.

  • My appointment went the same way. I ended up in L&D today due to high blood pressure and swelling. My blood work came back fine thank god but they were talking about induction and  very close monitering. I was so stressed, so I am doing a 24 hour urine collection, resting and I have to go back to the dr again Thurs. Good luck ladies!

  • 38 week appointment today. Legs were a bit swollen and BP was a little high.  Dr ordered blood work and i have to do the 24 urine sample as well.  I was hoping to make it to work for another week, but I'm thinking I'll just be staying home.  I'm a teacher and the end of the quarter is on Friday, so it kind of works out.

I think i'll stock up on redbox movies and finally check out some movies on nextflix that I've been meaning to watch.  I have a book i'll try to read in between naps (this is starting to sound real good!)  And maybe I'll finally decide on a name for the baby! :)

  • Well I'm sorry you guys are having the same issues, but it's reassuring to see I'm not the only one.  Once I realized it meant no waking up at 7am to go to work tomorrow (and the next day and the next...), I started to look on the bright side a little.  I'm just sure I'll get frustrated soon that I can't really do anything!
  • I've been on bedrest for 11 weeks. I'd call myself a pro!

You will probably be bored, but hopefully it won't be that long for you!

I spend insane amounts of time on the bump and other websites.

I've become a coupon/frugal saving queen with all my research. I have reorganized my cook books and recipes, caught up on thank you cards, called old friends, online shopped like crazy.

It's rough some days but I honestly just try to enjoy it most days because I know I will NEVER be able to rest like this again. It's no walk in the park and there have been many days of just crying, but my baby is safe and happy in there and not in a nicu and for that I am so incredibly blessed I have made it so far.

Best of luck to you! Hopefully your BP stays down in normal range!

  • Thanks Sarah -- I knew you've been on bedrest for a while so glad to hear you're keeping your spirits up.  Thanks for the advice!
  • I am in the same boat with you ladies. It started last week at my 36 week apt. I spent some time in L&D Sat but since my blood work was fine and bp went down a little they sent me home for the 24 hr urine collection. Dr was not concerned about that either. I guess he's just concerned with the bp and said there's no reason to deliver early but I will be on bed rest till delivery. Who knows when that will be as I have made NO progress at all with this little one!

  • I went in today and had high blood pressure so they took some blood and I won't find out those results until tomorrow but for now my doctor said that when I am not at work, I have to lay down, rest and elevate my feet.
