Spotting @ 38 weeks

Anyone experience spotting this late into the pregnancy?  As I was getting ready for my growth u/s this morning I wiped and saw red and then pinkish blood.  There was no mucus with it.  I wiped it away and went to the u/s (babe is looking good - yay!).  Afterward, I called my Dr and he sent me to L&D where I was monitored for a few hours and then discharged once it was determined I was not in labor.  The on call Dr said this happens sometimes but had no explanation.

Anyone else have this happen? 

ETA: I did not have intercourse or an internal exam recently.
