at our 6 month appointment our doctor suggested the flu shot. I am not anti-vaccine, so I said yes
Well-- after reading more I am not so sure I want him to get the 2nd shot which he is susposed to get 1 month from the first.
I have to talk to them to find out if they used the totally mecury free kind (I am hoping so, but don't yet). If they did not and they used the kind that has mecury, I will likely not do the 2nd shot and of course I will worry that something will happen to him later due to this.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Re: Flu shot for your 6 month old?
DS got his flu shot 3 days before he hit the 6 month mark. They did not tell me he needed to come back for another shot?
And I have no idea what the difference is between the types of shots can you explain?
There have been reports that the flu shot in infants can cause seizures.

Sourpatch- there is only 1 brand of flu shots that is recomended for infants 6 months to 2 years. This brand has several different types... one is a single dose vial and the others are multi-use vials. I guess only the single use vials are totally mercury free.
It is debated and the research is mixed, but there are some that say that mecury is dangerous for children under 2 to have as it could cause developmental issues. There are some that say this is BS.
Honestly I have my doubts about if the small trace amounts could possibly matter, but then there is also the reported seizures that have happened that they are still investigating on if they are linked to the flu shot.
My understanding is that for any child's 1st year of getting the flu vaccine they need to get 2 doses.
I am calling my doctor to ask if the dose he got had mecury and what happens if I don't do the 2nd dose.
The Dr. Sears website lists the various brands (not advocating that he is a good person to follow or anything, but just the facts about which vaccines have what, it is a good source).
Children under the age of 8, being vaccinated for the first time, are supposed to receive 2 doses of the flu vaccine 4 or more weeks apart. Here is the CDC link with that and more info on the importance of the flu vaccine for children.
DS has received both flu shots.

Other than Dr. Sears, can you share your unbiased sources that are anti flu shots? I'm truly curious.
OP: please don't buy into the 'mercury is horrible' hype! Please learn about the process that vaccines made. For all the supposed 'toxins' in these vaccines, they are trace amounts by the time the vaccines are processed.
Did you know that mercury can also be found in breastmilk and formula? The 'toxins' that are played up as so horrible in vaccines are often times found in our environments, food, etc.
I'd get your baby the second shot, because that why your baby will be better protected.
I'm curious about that as well.
Vaccines are my soapbox issue (as both a nurse, and a mother), and I'm going to stay out of this other than to say......webmd isn't exactly a credible up to date source of medical information.
ETA: Ok, I have to say one more thing and Im done. Just because your child doesn't go to daycare, or isn't around other children, doesn't mean they won't get the flu. If you go to the grocery store, or really, even out of the house, they're exposed. Plus, a parent could easily give it to a child too.
Ok, seriously. No more from me.
call me crazy, but I personally think there is a right and wrong when it comes to health and science....and I don't think how a mom "feels" should figure into a medical decision.
But I know some on here disagree. The logic also kinda sounds like the poster who was anti BFing because she thinks babies should have to build their own immune system from day one.
That being said, I'm actually not passionate about the flu shot debate. I'm just curious as to the unbiased sources some of the PPs used. I want to read them for my own information.
IrishBride,
Information from another standpoint...

LOL. I do hope you don't seriously consider anything about vaccines from "Natural News" to be either unbiased or worth reading.
Here's a more credible source:
https://drtenpenny.com/the_truth_about_the_flu_Shot.aspx
And I wasn't aware that CBS news is biased.
LOL x 10000. Dr. Tenpenny is not credible in the least.
And while I actually didn't disparage the CBS news posting in your last post, I have to say that that particular news story read as one half-step up from an editorial.
ditto this. I also got it and made DH get it since DD it was late November by the time DD was 6 months old (and she ended up getting sick right before her pedi appt. so she didn't get her shot till she was 7 months old...) and I knew if we got our shot, we'd be less likely to bring it home to her before she could get hers. That and I always get it every year being I have asthma. I've gotten it before (once before I got the shot, in early September... and once last year while pregnant even though I got the shot. That stunk ) and if a minor vaccine could prevent that week+ of complete and utter miserableness, I'll take it. I can't imagine my daughter going through that, especially knowing the complications flu can bring to infants.
Look, not really trying to start a huge debate here. Just do the research. I've yet to see studies and/or statistics proving the efficacy of the flu shot, or any other vaccine for that matter.
Sounds to me like YOU need to do your research. The most credible source you can cite is a CBS news article? You've not seen studies on the effectiveness of vaccines? Whens the last time you knew someone with Polio?
O FFS
Are you seriously fcking talking down to me about "doing research" after you just posted Natural News and Dr. Tenpenny as your "credible sources"?
I don't know whether to laugh at this or cry, because there are scores of others like you out there, rejecting actual scientific recommendations in favor of quackery and paranoia.
Sweetie - nothing is 100% safe and 100% effective. Nothing.
The vaccine conversation is about relative risk and relative benefit. And the existing scientific data show overwhelmingly that for the general population, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risk. Speaking specifically about the flu vaccine - the side effects of the vaccine are mostly mild, with some exceedingly rare severe side effects (and even these are treatable). On the flip side, the flu kills about 40,000 people in the U.S. every year, and hospitalizes another 200,000.
And you have yet to show any facts - just propaganda. But if this is what you consider adequate research, then I'm not surprised you're a sucker for "vaccine injury" hype.
ETA: did you delete? lol.
Not rejecting scientific "recommendations" at all. Just going with the facts. The information is there. Funny how there is a plethora on information about the danger and negative side effects of vaccines, but where is the information about how safe and effective they are? FACT- vaccines have been proven to cause serious injury and even death. They even tell you this on the information sheet you get at the pediatricina's office. If someone could come forward with any sort of information stating that vaccines are in fact 100% efective and 100% safe then I'll be happy to continue this conversation. Otherwise...I'm out.
Were you dropped on your head as a baby/
The FACTS are out there if you look at the right sources!
Right off the CDC website:
Overall, in years when the vaccine and circulating viruses are well-matched, influenza vaccines can be expected to reduce laboratory-confirmed influenza by approximately 70% to 90% in healthy adults <65 years of age.
Please do better research on MEDICAL websites with evidence based studies to support their recommendations
A 4-year randomized, placebo-controlled trial of children aged 1-15 years found vaccine effectiveness ranging from 77% to 91%, following only one dose of vaccine given to previously unvaccinated children (from the CDC website)
Another 2-year study of children aged 6-24 months found that the vaccine was 66% effective against laboratory-confirmed influenza in year 1 of the study. Only children who were fully vaccinated (i.e. had either 2 doses if not previously vaccinated, or 1 dose if previously vaccinated) versus unvaccinated children were included in the analysis. In the other year, few cases of influenza occurred, making it difficult to assess the vaccine?s effectiveness.
A study of influenza vaccine effectiveness among >5,000 children aged 6-23 months found vaccine effectiveness of 49% against clinically diagnosed pneumonia or influenza among fully vaccinated children (Ritzwoller, Pediatrics 2005).
All of these studies together suggest substantial benefit from influenza vaccination of children.
There have been several studies lately that have focused on the fact that high schools and colleges no longer teach critical thinking skills.
This thread is proof.
I don't know what's worse....sheer stupidity or ignorant stubbornness.
Both, when it comes to things like vaccines because if enough people have the same views it puts the general population, our children, us, etc. at risk. Ain't that grand!
