TTC After a Loss

Genetic Counselor - No Answers or Help

Since finding out last week that I have a balanced translocation I've been doing as much research as possible and was really hoping the GC would be able to answer some of the questions I had.  Nope, there are no answers for the entire page of questions I had!  Because the GC is an MD and teaches at UCLA I was so hopeful she could shed some light on our situation and give me some specifics.  But there just aren't any answers.  Basically every pregnancy has up to a 50% chance of loss and it won't always be in the first tri.  She said I could have 20 m/c's before a healthy, viable one or the 2 I've had could be all. There is no way to know.  So we continue on the path of unknown.  The only other option that could provide more certainty is IVF with pre-genetic testing but financially that it not an option for us at this point.

What scares me the most is the journey ahead...the anxiety and fears that we all have experienced and will experience with every pregnancy.  I'm going to try to take this up to 50% chance of loss statistic and push it aside though.  Honestly what good does it do me?!

Re: Genetic Counselor - No Answers or Help

  • Ugh!  I am so sorry, (((hugs))).  I would be disappointed with that doctor too, even if she is from an excellent practice!  I am sorry that you didn't get any answers today, but I want to continue to wish well thoughts for you.

  • Oh brenn, I am really sorry you couldn't get any of your questions answered. I have throughly researched IVF with PGD and PGS. I don't know if this would help but I called Genesis Genetics 1-800 # posted on their website to see if I get get a few questions answered before my doctor had even sent over my paperwork I was able to speak to one of their genetics counselors (not an MD) and got 90% of my questions answered. They were able to tell me a lot of things my RE wasn't aware of.

I can imagine how it feel to deal with the idea of 50% of pregnancies ending in mc (because that was what I was originally told). It SUCKS! (((hugs)))

  • hopefully you get some answers soon. maybe you just havent found the right GC yet. Can you get another opinion? I am still waiting on the microarray to come back from my amniotic fluid and then we will see what the story for our baby girls malformations. I have done some research on the PGD/PGS with IVF, and we will see in  a few days when the results come back if that would even help us.

good luck. hugs. it stinks when you cant get answers...

  • I'm so sorry your GC visit was so unhelpful and discouraging. *HUGS* And I'm sorry you have to deal with those odds, its a shame she couldn't have tried to be more helpful in answering your questions. It seems like that is their job. I'm so sorry hon, I can't imagine how you are feeling right now but I hope you can find someone who can at least get you the information you need.

  • I agree, it sounds like your appointment was less than helpful.  I think that it's good to provide couples with realistic expectations and honest answers to their questions, but it doesn't sound like the GC provided any solutions.  I'm sorry this is so frustrating!  ((HUGS))

  • You could also try to find out if any REs in your area are doing PGD studies. My RE is doing a PGD study that we can participate in if we choose to... it's free (the PGD part, not the IVF part) but there's a 50/50 chance we'll be in the control group versus the test group. The good thing is that all the non-transferred embryos get tested before they are frozen, even if you are in the control group so any embies we would use in an FET would have been tested already.
