Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Do you know anything about broken bones?

I broke my right foot 2 days before Christmas and have been in a cast ever since. I was on crutches for the first 3 weeks and then able to bear a little weight on my heel for the past two weeks. I went back to the doc today and he said that there has been no new bone growth but that the break is getting any worse either. He wants me to get back on the crutches for two weeks and then start bearing weight on my heel after that. He wants me back in five weeks. Thats ten total weeks!!!!  The first doc said I would need surgery because of the type of break (spiral oblique) but I got a second opinion from this doc (more reputable) and he said no surgery. My worst fear is going back in five weeks and having to have surgery anyways!!!

Do you think I should get a third opinion? I cant take care of a three month old on crutches for much longer without going insane!!! I have to depend on people for rides, cleaning the house, helping me bring the baby upstairs, etc.!!!

Re: Do you know anything about broken bones?

  • I do not envy you. I've broken so many bones, it's scary!  I have had the same issue about no new growth too. Honestly, I know it's hard, but you have to stay off of it, all of the time. I'd even question any weight on it after those 2 weeks, but check with your doc. Also, I don't know how much this will help, but maybe take some Calcium supplements?? Can't hurt right?

  • Sorry to hear that. First off, if you are breast feeding it can make healing take longer in some cases. You should make sure your eating healthy with enough protein and calcium. I work in Physical Therapy, and have seen some doozies. It's not going to be easy for the next few months. Get as much help as you can. Stay off your foot so it can heal faster as Doc has said. It sounds like your 2nd opinion is correct and should know what he's talking about. Is he an orthopedic Doctor?

Someone with a spiral fracture needs to be very careful with weight bearing too early. If you step on it wrong it could fracture worse and become unstable. Then you would definitely need surgery.

Hang in there and I promise it will get better....GL

  • Thank you guys so much!  I will try the calcium supplements and try to stay off it as much as I can. And yes, I am breastfeeding so that may attribute to the fact that its not healing as well as it should be!

  • Apples help too, I know it's weird but they help the calcium absorb better.  Also, avoid sodas because they can hinder calcium absorption.  I broke my collar bone a few years back and it was slow to heal.
