Babies: 0 - 3 Months

asking for a vicodin refill...

My csection area has been very sore & painful at times, and with a toddler & a baby I get frustrated easy when im in pain all day. I asked my doc for a refill on vicodin to manage pain so I wouldnt snap so easily at my babies...she goes into this long speech about post pregnancy depression and she tells me she thinks im depressed. what?! I didnt say I was sad or anything. I told her I wasnt depressed, just wanted a refill on pain meds to get me to my 6 week post pregnancy check up. she then offers me oxy codone as the Pain meds...i told her I had that after my csection and didnt like it, I felt icky and nausa...then she talked about drug addiction to me. What?! I just want the 30 tiny vicodin pills to help me get through my days of recoverying from a MAJOR SURGERY..while taking care of two kids. Finally she agreed to give me the refill but tried making me feel bad by telling me she thought I should be ok with just ibuprofen... Anyone else have such a difficult time with getting a pain med refill??

Re: asking for a vicodin refill...

  •  Sorry you're in pain and had a struggle with your doctor. I had my CS in Germany, and the only thing they gave me the entire time was advil and tylenol!

It did really, really suck, but I noticed after about two weeks it dramatically improved. It felt slow going there for a while, but then markedly improved, so hopefully that will be the case for you too!?

Try not to take it personally, I'm sure she's just on the lookout for post pregnancy mental health issues since they're so common. (Although it seems weird she would be okay prescribing oxycodone and not vicodin- both are opiates...weird)

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Taking vicodin for a whole month is a lot.  I understand why the doctor would be concerned.  How far along PP are you?  After about two weeks I felt much better and I was okay just taking advil as needed.  I also have a toddler and a newborn, so I understand the pain, but I would get myself off the pain meds ASAP b/c it can easily become an addiction before you know it.

  • My doctor gave me 25 days of Percoset (8 pills/day), which is 5 refills. I didn't finish the 4th. I did have a complication, though.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I've been with my doctor for 5 years and she knows that I have chronic pain disorder and have been on narcotics for years without ever becoming addicted. She trusts that I know when I need meds and how to safely take them.

ETA: My point was that it shouldn't be such a big deal to get one vicodin refill, but I didn't want my dr to sound like a pill pusher either.

  • I only used my pain meds for the first two days just to get myself up and walking, then I was fine with just Motrin so I can't speak to whether or not I had trouble getting a refill. I do know that vicodin is highly addictive and once you take it for a long time (like a month) it can cause your pain to get worse when you stop taking it or cause you to have pain elsewhere -like headaches- which just makes you want to take more, so I can also see why your doctor probably felt obligated to explore other options.

I agree with this.  I have a toddler at home too and didn't need the pain meds after about 2 weeks.  I'm not saying you aren't in pain, but have you tried any OTC meds?  I only ask b/c vicodin can be very addictive.  It sounds like your dr was just looking out for the things she is supposed to.

  • I was on vicodin and motrin and just a few days ago stopped taking the vicodin. But just 3 days ago I was already considering asking my doc for a refill because it was so bad. SOrry your doc is giving you crap for it.. I can't imagine having a toddler right now, too.. More power to ya momma!

Anyway, my point is.. hopefully it gets easier in a few days for you like it did for me? Taking walks really helped me. Fresh air and all. I had to force myself out, but it was worth it :) Good luck!

  • She's probably just looking out for you. I was discharged with 800 mg Motrin which I'm still taking every 6 hours (2 weeks out) She also gave me Tylenol with Codeine which when I do take those I cut them in half. I do get sore when I get up and do to much. I don't have 2 little ones, but I have a 2 week old and a special needs 8 year old. I do notice some pain when I get to active.

I do think it's weird she gave you a hard time about Vicoden but then offered you Oxycodene....Can you ask for the Motrin 800?

I kinda have to agree but then again I'm not in your shoes....

I have 3u3 and was only on Aleve by the time I left the hospital (3 days PP) and had a c-section (my 3rd in 3 years). I can kind of understand why she was concerned though, only because a lot of people do not need to be on something that strong for so long BUT everyone's pain tolerance is definitely different.

    GL!! :)
