Does your LO watch TV?

We will have the TV on while DS is in the room (not that anyone gets to watch it since we're chasing him around!) but we've tried putting on cartoons here and there and he has no interest. Some shows will grab his attention (like Wheel of Fortune lol) but for the most part, nothing. Not that I'm trying to get him to sit and watch it all day, I just wonder at what age can I sit down and watch a movie with him? Or sometimes we'd like to get him to sit still for 10 minutes so we can breath. Impossible.

Re: Does your LO watch TV?

  • I have a DS(3). He finally can sit and watch a movie. DD(18m) will glance up occasionally but she usually just plays with toys right now.

My kids love Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Little Einsteins.

  • Never. I don't allow it.
  • Yes. She likes to watch the cartoons on PBS. She usually never watches an entire episode though. I just keep it on for background noise.

  • We always have our TV on as well.  Whenever I have tried to have her watch anything, it doesn't work and its pretty rare I put something on specifically for her.  We always have Palladia (concert/music) on when we're home, more for background and the only thing that appears to grab her attention are the little commercial skits for the chanel.  Other than that nothing else grabs her attentoin.

  • I wasn't really keen on letting DD watch TV since she's in Daycare all day during the week. We do watch Wiggles videos (for 10 minutes maybe) on youtube sometimes and she LOVES them but that's because she, herself, is a singing and Dancing machine! The other day I was feeling pretty crappy and just didn't feel like I could read the same book for the 700th time so I looked on our cable ON Demand and found they have Wiggles so we watched a 23 Minute show and she sat on my lap the entire time!
  • No - Zack has very little interest in TV. But I rarely watch it myself and it's almost never on, so maybe that's why?

  • DS Loves Elmo! Whenever Sesame Street is on, I'll point to the TV, he'll see it's Elmo and get soooo excited, then go back to playing.  He'll glance up every now and again & you can tell he's listening to the music since he dances a little, but he's not into watching an episode.

I personally think "banning" TV, or anything for that matter is just going to make more problems than it's really worth.

  • Every once in awhile it will catch his attention, but for the most part.. no.

  • I always have the TV on for noise, but the only show DD really likes to watch all the way through is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  I let her watch cartoons in the morning and thats about it, although yesterday she was following me around with a Tinkerbell movie she found and I put it in for her, surprisingly she watched several good chunks of it at a time.

  • It's more like background noise, if I am cleaning or cooking I will put on Nick Jr and he'll watch about 10-15 mins. Although, in the morning while he is drinking his milk we put the cartoons on in Spanish, so he can pick up on the second language, since I forget to speak to him in Spanish while we are home, my parents will be furious if he can't communicate with them later on.
  • I will try to get her to watch a cartoon if I am trying to say clip her nails, but she has little interest in watching anything. She would rather play, which is fine by me. We watch too much TV as it is so its nice that she isn't into it.
  • I keep Sprout or Nick Jr on a lot and it's mostly just in the background. But DD loves Elmo, the Wiggles, Monkey See Monkey Do and Yo Gabba Gabba. She'll pay attention to any of those shows for a few minutes at a time. She mostly likes anything where there is music and dancing, especially if it has kids dancing. She loves to dance along with them! It's adorable

    Happy 15 months!

  • Katie likes to watch 'Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies' on Sprout.

  • my son is addicted. he actually throws a tantrum when we turn it off.  I limit to one hour a day (30 mins with the nanny and 30 mins with me while i make dinner) but man, this kid is possessed by the tv!  he LOVES elmo! he walks around screaming elmo, elmo, ELMO!   i hope my nanny is truely using only 30 minutes though!
  • My daughter has no interest in TV or movies. The TV will be on and she doesn't even look at it. I'll try a cartoon or kid show and she might watch for a minute or two. The only thing she has ever watched for any amount of time was a dog show. She's kind of obsessed with dogs right now.

  • Our DS sounds like yours. We have it on throughout the day but very few things catch his attention. Some commercial jingles he loves! The only thing he can actually sit and watch is Yo Gabba Gabba and the Fresh Beat Band on Nick Jr. He loves these two shows. He doesn't watch them too often because we're usually busy doing stuff and I don't even know when they come on. He also watches sometimes during breakfast and snack but really, he could just take it or leave it.
  • My DS will only watch snowmobile videos with his dad.  They will do this a couple of times a week right before bed together.  My DH used to put them on when he was a newborn and would not stop crying and it calmed him right down they have done it ever since. It is their thing. Otherwise he does not really care about TV.
  • Sadly my 16 month old will sit and watch almost all of Toy Story (any of the 3).  He will not play or anything, so that said we try not to put it on often.  Comes in handy though like yesterday we got new couches and had to unload them...put Cedric in his high chair with Toy Story on and he didn't even pay attention to us unloading couches!  Other shows he will watch but will play during it.

  • The wretched fatigue of the first trimester has led to far more TV in our house than I'm comfortable with...but on some afternoons when I'm just too exhausted to chase DS around, I turn on an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba, which he adores. He's never watched an entire episode from start to finish -- he'll watch for a few minutes, play, watch, play, etc.

Bad, I know...but you gotta do what you gotta do.

  • My LO has been a tv addict since we brought him home.  I only let him watch the sprout channel, and I don't care what anyone tells e about it, he has learned alot from the tv.  I make sure we turn it off and have some quiet time, but when Im doing chores and he will sit for and hour in his playpen and just watch sesame street I call that a blessing!!
  • We also have the TV on in the background at some point during the day. DS has ZERO interest in it. He may glance up if he hears a funny noise but has no real interest in sitting and watching a program. I think he only loves the TV because it distracts ME long enough for HIM to try and get into something.

Ya I'm just now getting my energy back and there are many times I put something on for him and wished I could just lay there for a minute. No luck though :(

My son always watched so he'll sit quiet for a whole 24 minute Dino Dan episode. We mostly watch Nick Jr or ABC. He knows "Time & Temperature from TD bank" which is after most shows. He watches YGG, Kai Lan, Fresh Beat Band and Dino Dan. We took him to the movies on xmas and he was able to sit for an hour before he wanted to get up and run. That was at 23 mo.
  • My DS will not watch TV or movies BUT LOVES ALL BABY EINSTEIN movies! It's so wierd! He wont watch any cartoon or movies at all but he loves every single Baby Einstein movie! We bought him the whole collection. We will have it playing all day in his room and he will go in there for minutes at a time to watch then he leaves to the living room to play and back to his room to watch the movie. He just goes back and forth.

  • Practically Never.

There have been, I think, three times when we have been both quite sick at the same time, that we have snuggled down to watch something. At most, 10 min at a time.

I like Krtek mole cartoons on youtube, because they are silent and cute. My in-laws live in the Czech republic so they get her little Krtek things all the time.

We've also watched some Saun The Sheep via netflix, but it seems to be too fast paced for her. She can't follow the story line and so loses interest (but I enjoy them).

I also like Pingu the penguin (more youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/pingu?blend=2&ob=4)

  • DS loves Sesame Street.  He doesnt 'watch the whole episode at one time.  I'll turn it on while I make breakfast or dinner and he doesn't sit and watch it for about 15 mins as a relaxing time before nap.  He would watch it all day if we let him.  Don't think he would do well with a movie though
