We've had 4 ear infections in 4 weeks, two of which were double ear infections. We were in again this morning with another double and a 102 degree temp. Prior to this we've didn't have any. But our pedi wants us to see an ENT about tubes. Has anyone been to an ENT yet for ear infections? Just curious your experience and if they even do tubes this young? So much for the immune protection in BM, he's EBF!!
Re: has anyone been to an ENT yet?
Yup! DS had an ear infection for 4 weeks. As it was his first, they said tubes were an option but weren't necessarily recommended since he's only had one. I was concerned w/how young and they said that 7 mths is about the right age.
We ended up having ds's ear drained (via needle) and cultured to determine which antibiotic to use. He received two days of injections of rocephin and it finally started clearing up today!!
Wow, Thanks for your response! How did the draining (with the needle) go? Was it real rough on LO?
They aren't certain if LO's are 4 ear infections or one long one. Our appointment is Thursday so I'm interested to see what they say but I'm with you 8 months seems young for tubes.
Actually, the draining was fine - less crying than with vaccines. The rocephin injections were the worst - bigger needles, a lot of medicine and in both legs. He cried for several minutes afterwards.
But between the draining (which I think made him feel better) and the rocephin (the only antibiotic given that can fight the type of bacteria he had), he's finally better.
My guess is that it's probably the same infection, but who knows. If I hadn't been dragging ds to the ped's office every 5 days for them to check his ears, it could have lasted a lot longer and his might have been diagnosed as different ones. DS didn't have a fever or any cold symptoms, so my only way of knowing if he was getting better was whether he'd wake up crying at night. And he kept doing it, so we kept going back to the doctor.
If you're interested, ds is ebf and is in daycare. The oddest thing is that he's had a few colds so far, but no cold at all with this infection.
Good luck with your appointment! I know a few moms whose babies needed tubes and their kids were all ear infection free afterward.
Oliver has been seeing an ENT for a few months (he has mild hearing loss so it's standard procedure to see an ENT). He hasn't had any ear infections but he did have fluid in his ears, so we had tubes put in a few weeks ago. He's getting hearing aids and the tubes will help keep his ears clear, so the aids work better.
It was a really easy procedure...harder on us than on him (I was just worried about anesthesia). The whole thing took 10 minutes and he woke up right after they took off the mask. He was back to normal about an hour later. We had to put antibiotic drops in his ears for 5 days afterwards.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
