xp: diaper irritation, help!

DS has been potty trained (day) for 3 months and we have used disposables at night trying to use up the last of a pack leftover from a trip.  I got him back in cloth last weekend for nights and his penis turned bright red overnight and he was crying on the potty saying it hurt.  At first I thought maybe it was irritation from running around with no underpants in his pajamas all day.  So we did powder and vaseline and a disposable again that night and all looked better the next day.  Back to cloth again the next night and now the very tip of his penis is bright red....I put neosporin on it for now.  I can't imagine what else could be causing it but the diapers.  Has anyone else ever had their child have a reaction to going back in cloth after a while out of it?  He always has had sensitive skin but he never had this problem. He was in a blueberry pocket with MF and AFFF.  Diaper didn't leak but was very wet and ammonia-y by morning. Could the ammonia cause the irritation? Would additional hemp help diffuse it?  I want to be able to use our CD's but not at the expense of poor DS' penis.  Suggestions?

  • Yup, ammonia can cause burns basically so I imagine that's what it is.  What is your wash routine and how often are you washing?  Sounds like you probably need to change something up to get rid of the ammonia.  Of course if you're only diapering at night it might make more sense to use sposies (blasphemy, I know!) since you won't have enough for a full load as often as you'll need to wash.

  • I used to use country save, doing a warm short wash, then a hot w/ detergent, then a warm short w/o detergent.  My neighbor is actually washing our night dipes now since her 1 yo is full time cloth still.  She uses rockin green and her diapers are fine.  He's worn (recently) diapers washed in both and so I don't think it has to do with detergent.  I think he pees early in the night so wouldn't it be ammonia by morning regardless of wash issues?  His day diapers never had a smell at all after peeing.  Just after a full night. And if that's the case.... what to do!??

As much as I love the cloth (and he's much more aware of wetness in the morning) we have been using sposies for a couple months at night anyway so I won't die if we just go back to that. Argh.
