age when your baby went to size 4 diapers?

I'm trying to gauge if I should stock up on more size 3's for Josie or not--she just switched to them and I have 2 big boxes (~200 each) and several small packs.  She's close to 20 pounds now.  About how long was your child in size 3's/what age did they switch to 4's?  I realize it varies a lot from baby to baby.

Re: age when your baby went to size 4 diapers?

  • DS is almost 15 months and still in 3s.  We go back and forth between cloth and disposables, but he's been in 3s for a long time.  He was exactly 20 pounds at his one year appointment.

  • Your right, every baby seems to grow differently and it all depends on their wetting habits as well.

Our son is 13 months, soon to be 14. He weighed 23 lbs at his 12 month appt, only gaining 1 pound since the 9 month appt. But, he is 31" long, very tall and slender. He is a HEAVY wetter. He has been in size 3 for quite awhile now, and I still have 2 huge boxes of size 3's that he will use. After that, then we will see if he is ready to switch up to size 4 or not. I am not a fan of the "diaper butt" look, so I have always kept him in a true to size diaper vs a size larger. But, at night he does wear overnight diapers in size 4 to collect all of the pee that he seems to drum up throughout the night.

I actually stocked up in diapers up to size 5's a long time ago. When I find good sales or deals online, then I buy whatever we need more of. For instance, like I said we still have 2 huge boxes of over 200 diapers each in 3's, 3 boxes of size 4's, and 2 boxes in size 5's. So, if we get to the end of the stock of 3's and he still needs 3's then I will buy 1 more smaller box and work from there. But, so far since he was born usually by the time we are running out of a particular size, he is ready to go to the next one up anyways.

Sorry for the long post. Just trying to explain how I kinda worked it in our house. I would say maybe start buying some 4's if you wanted to be stocked up on the next size when she needs to switch. If you get towards the end of the 3's and she isn't ready yet, just buy another smaller box. But, with our son anyways, he really really slowed down growth wise from about 9 months on. Hence him staying in size 3's for so long.

  • DS never did. He was size 3 up until he was potty trained (and wore pull ups)
  • Andrew is up to 25 lb Party!!! and still in size 3.  He has no butt and no belly; he's tall & slender.

They are starting to get a smidge on the small side and I'm considering going up to 4's, but, I'm wondering how much bulkier they are.

  • I had to look back at my blog.

He was 15 months when we moved to size 4 diaper and he's still wearing them now (20 1/2 m).  He weighed 21 lbs at 12m.

  • I think L wore size 4's from somewhere between 9-12 mos to about 16 mos. She wore size 5 most of last year and within the last 3 months we made a full time switch to size 6.  She was always ready for the next size diaper 2-3 lbs before the recommended weight minimum.  The other little boy at the sitter's is taller and rounder than L and still wears 5s.  We switched because the stars had to align just so to get a size 5 on her right with minimal effort.  The 6's seemed enormous at first but I enjoy the easier diaper change with the larger size.
  • R will be 18m Sunday and she's still in 3's. She's been in them since she was about 8m. We go to the dr next week for her wellness check up but I'm guessing she is 23lb and 32-33" somewhat in that ballpark.

  • Where do you buy diapers, Kari? Can you just stock up and keep receipts, with a plan to exchange for a different size if she outgrows them? Seems to me like every baby is very different and there's no use in seeing what other kiddos did.

  • I wouldn't say there is no use in seeing.  I know certain sizes they tend to stay in longer than others, so I was curious about size 3.  I have another amazon 20% off coupon, so I was going to order another box but not sure whether to get 3 or 4.  They only have a 30 day return policy, and it's not worth shipping it back.

Ohhh, gotcha. I thought if it was like, Target, or something it would be a no-brainer. You're right - return shipping would be a PITA, esp. if it has to be 30 days.

  • Leah has been in size 3's for what feels like forever.  I think she probably has been in them close to 6ish months now (she is almost 14 months) and I don't forsee us having to move up to 4's anytime soon.  She also fits into the tall and slender category (although she is getting rounder :)).  I think all said and done we will probably be in the  3's for around 9-10 months.

Her stats were the following if this helps:

     6 mos. 16lbs 1.5oz and 26.25 in

    9 mos. 17lbs 14 oz and 29 in

    12 mos. 19lbs 14oz and 29.5 in

  • Clark will be 14 months tomorrow and we just switched this week to size 4 diapers.  He is about 32 inches and 23lbs so he is in the tall and skinny category which is why we had to switch to the size 4 for during the day because the size 3 was just riding way to low on his waist and it was a pain to put on.  We have been in size 4 baby dry diapers for night time for awhile because he just pees so much at night!  Hope that helps!

  • Here is my unscientific method to decide when to move up a size.  Does the diaper make red marks on their belly?  If so, we move up, lol!  Sorry, that's not helpful!

Oh, and Kathy, my 6 month old is already in size 3.  It blows my mind that A has the same size butt!  My chunky monkey has thunderthighs!

lol!  This kid has no thigh rolls at all!  Although, they are starting to feel a little "soft" instead of all muscular ;) ha.
