Success after IF

c/s question

Do they put you out when they stitch you up?

ETA:  What I mean is do they put you under general anesthesia even with an epi/spinal for the stitching up?

Re: c/s question

  • You can have a full spinal block or an epidural (higher strength than a normal one), depends on the anistezE-ologist (sp why bother?)

  • there is no reason to use general anesthesia at all unless it's an emergency and they don't have a spinal/epidural in place already.  They are cutting you open and pulling a kid out with the spinal- they can certainly stitch you up with the spinal (or epidural on high... most prefer spinals b/c it's a total block)

Thanks for clearing this up.  That is what I thought but my mom was convinced that they put you out afterwards.

  • Do you mean like, put you OUT?  Nope (unless you're already under general anesthesia, like in an emergency C situation).  I had a spinal block for the surgery, and they didn't do anything special when they did my staples.

  • I was put under general for my entire c/s because of a failed spinal but if I had just a spinal I would have been awake for the switching up.

Only time I ever heard of them putting someone under the c/s afterwards is if some emergency happens that they need too!

  • Thanks everyone.  No idea where my mom got her info from.
  • I had a spinal.  No other anesthesia at all.

  • Some anesthesiologist offer to let you take a 'nap' after the baby is gone to the nursery, while you are being sewn up.

It isn't being 'put out', but just a light nap.
