How long for BRAT diet?

Ava has the super fun stomach bug that's been going around.  She puked every half an hour from 1:30 AM to 4 AM, then the diarrhea started this afternoon and has been about every half an hour as well.  She's acting totally fine -- no fever, not bothering her in the slightest.  Do I have to continue BRAT for 24 hours after diarrhea stops, or just after vomiting stops?

Thanks!  And pray that the babies don't get it....

  • I have no idea- but just wanted to say I am sorry that the evil bug has entered your home. :(

I hope Ava is better and that no one else gets sick!

  • We usually continue it for about 24 hours, mainly because we have a lot of false starts at getting better.  Someone will seem better for about 8-12 hours then start being sick again!

Hope she feels better soon and doesn't share!

  • I would say for 24 hours after the throwing up stops but you could go a little longer if you feel the need.
  • Our pedi said BRAT diet for first couple of meals and if they tolerate it well to branch out after that. Henry also had the bug overnight, I gave him BRAT for b'fast and lunch, and he was back to a regular meal at dinner. They  bounce back quickly!

ETA: I missed that she has diarrhea...we didn't deal with that loveliness, so I'm not sure if that changes things.

  • I would stick with BRAT through tomorrow. It is going to help with the diarrhea as well. No milk until they are vomit free for 48 hours, 72 hours is even better. I find that if I start milk too early they end up throwing it up. Which can be really hard to get a 2 year old to understand they cannot have it. Luckily mine are now 2 1/2 and they get it when I say that it will make their belly hurt and they cannot have milk like Sissy does.

  • Check with your doctor - ours is anti-BRAT.  Our pedi is a big believer in whatever they want to eat to get the evil out of the intestines.  He feels that the more they are willing to eat the sooner much of the gunk will get out..

Funny, my husband feels the same way.  As soon as he feels like eating he eats whatever he wants, and it always works for him.  He promoted that with Cal too.  The only other thing I can add is to give her probiotics for the diarrhea.

    I'm sorry she's sick, Jill!

  • Thanks, ladies!  It just so happens that she LOVES the BRAT diet because she is a carb addict ("You mean I can only eat crackers allllll day?  OK!").  She didn't ask to eat anything today anyway, but we did get in some crackers and a banana (and fluids).  My issue now is that she has a fever.  It was 101.9, but went down to 99.2 about 30 minutes after tylenol.  I HATE fevers.  :(

Kim, thanks for the probiotics tip -- didn't even think of that.

  • i would do it for a few days... even after the symptoms are gone.

Gray puked 3x's on Sunday - last time was 1pm and then was fine all night, fine all day Monday - and then this morning DH gave him a cup of milk and he puked it afterwards... too early for dairy.

i kept up with BRAT today and will do it at least one more day - probably not allow any milk on Thursday either.... i'm so tired of it and praying the others don't get it.

    good luck!
