::waves hi to everyone!::
What are some signs that LO is ready to start potty training? I don't think we're close, but H has gotten to the point where he poops and wants his diaper changed almost immediately. Wet diapers-he'd live in all day! Other than that, no "interest" is being shown as far as I know. He does love to play anywhere in the vicinity of a toilet, but I think that's just him being a boy! ![]()
Re: Potty training question
Some usual signs are telling you when they are wet/dirty, expressing an interest in going on the potty (not just playing like Hayden likes to do), and saying when they need to go.
I know Hayden isn't ready yet. I am probably going to get a potty around his 2nd birthday that we can try on but not go full out until fall. My goal is to be diaper free by the end of 2011.
When Dylan walked up to me at 15 months, told me he was pooping and then proceeded to do it right in front of me I knew I needed help and started reading books.
As for "ready"?
That's a debated topic.
Some will tell you they need to know the appropriate words about the process, get on the potty by themselves and be able to pull their pants up and down on their own.
As a Mom of 2 boys who were out of diapers at 20 months I personally don't subscribe to that thought process.
I think it's a good sign that he doesn't want to sit around in his own excrement but that's just me.
The next step would be that if you can tell BEFORE he poops just strip him down quick and put him on so the poop goes in the potty instead of the diaper. It really can be that simple to start. HE's not getting "potty trained" necessarily but it's getting the ball rolling.
If you want to catch a pee in the potty get a toddler potty, put it in the bath tub and let the warm water hit his feet while he's sitting there. That's how we got our first pees in the potty and things progressed from there with lots of praise and interest on their parts.

I'm kinda a fan of after #2.
But... I have zero patience when I'm sleep deprived so that made the 3rd trimester and the first 3-4 months after #2's birth the "no" zone for me!
Honestly? 2 in diapers is WAY easier than 1 newly potty trained. When they have to go they HAVE to go. It's sometimes tough to drop everything with a super new-born on the boob, etc.
2 in diapers would have been easier than PT'ing D at 20 months for SURE.
