C-section moms - ?s for you

I am having a scheduled c-section.  Let's assume that things go one time and all is well for me and LO.  What happens once the baby is delivered?  I know that I will go to recovery for a little while and LO needs to go to the nursery for a bit for tests/meds.  I am thinking that DH should go with the baby and then both can come back to me.  Sound normal?  Anything else that I need to know/be aware of?

Re: C-section moms - ?s for you

  • I had to have an unexpected c-section, so I had no idea what to expect. When leaving the delivery room LO was in my arms and went to recovery with me.....after getting me hooked up and meds in recovery I BF right then. LO stayed with me for about an hour in recovery and then went to the nursery, I was in recovery for about an hour more then to my room, LO came to the room about an hour later....goodluck!

  • Once he was delivered I sent DH to the other part of the room where they weighed, measured, cleaned, cut the cord, took his footprint, put his bracelets on. They swaddled him an brought him over to me. I was able to kiss him for a couple minutes but not hold him. They took him to the nursery and I sent DH with him. Once DH left the room they did not allow him back in. Once I was stiched up and delivered the placenta I was taken to recovery for an hour. Only my DH was there...baby was getting bathed an having the tests done in the nursery. Honestly I was so out of it, I couldn't even open my eyes I just slept, that it's a good thing DS was not there.
After the hour was up I was taken to my room and about a half hour later they brought DS in all bathed and swaddled. He came with the lactation consultant so we stripped the baby and had skin to skin time and started to nurse.
I will say that if you are interested in BF and since it's a planned c section I suggest you talk to the lactation consultant prior to getting it done so you can tell her your expectations. It was really hard for me to nurse because of all the meds- I could hardly focus my eyes when looking down at the baby. I had a really bad LC and felt really rushed during the time she was there.
    Good luck!!
  • Sounds normal to me.

I reluctantly ended up with a c-section. DD's tests were done in the same room as I was being sewn back up. SO was with her the entire time. Once the tests were done, he was given the option to to take her into our room and have me get there later, or wait around for us. He waited and the three of us went to our room together. The freezing was so strong that I had to wait an hour before breastfeeding. It had to wear off before I could try, so that I could ensure she was doing it properly.

ETA: In the OR I could touch and kiss DD but I couldn't hold her until we were in recovery.

  • It depends on your hospital. My DD never left my sight from the moment she was born. They were sewing me up and working on her in the same OR, gave her to me to hold on the ride back to my Labor & delivery room, let us all cuddle and love on her for about 45 minutes and then took her to the heated bed for all of the testing and bathing they needed to do right in my room. She never went to a nursery.

  • I had a scheduled section because LO was breech. I went in at a little after 12 and I was out by 1:15. She didn't have to go to the nursery right away so she stayed with me while my hubby went back to recovery to get out of his scrub garb. We were all reunited in recovery and we stayed there for about 2-3 hours before being moved into our own room.

  • Wow! I never had to go to recovery. After the c-section delivery i was taken right back to my room and all post-op requirments were done in there.

We had an unexpected c-section. We were in the operating room for roughly an hour. After the baby was out they showed him to me then took him to the other end of the room to weigh him messure him ect. And at that time my husband was able to cut the embilical cord. After the baby was taken care of he was brought near me untill they were finished closing me up. Then my LO was taken to my room where i met him minutes later. We were in there for our recovery for and hour. After that we had vistors for a couple hours befor they did any blood test or gave him his bath.

  • I had an unplanned c-section.  After she was born, DH went to watch as she got checked out and cleaned up.  Then he brought her over to me where I was able to see her, but couldn't hold her yet.  DH went with her to the nursery for her first bath and then to show her off to the family as I went to recovery.  I was there for about an hour or an hour and a half.  DH did bring her in at one point where I could finally hold her and breastfeed her.  They did take LO back to the nursery or my room (don't remember) and then I was wheeled to my room.

  • I had a scheduled and the baby stayed with us the whole time, through recovery and into the room.  Our hopsital does rooming in and they do everything for the baby in the room aside from the circumcision, unless we wanted to send ds to the nursery he stayed with us.

  • I guess it depends where you deliver depends on what happens after.  I also work in L&D.  Where I work, as long as there are no complications your baby can remain with you for 1 hour then the baby goes to the nursery for a bath, assessment and shots.  During that time the mother is in the recovery room and transferred to pp room and meets back up with the baby.

Where I delivered the baby was with me the whole time.  Never left until she 4 hours old for her bath and assessment and shots.  She was gone maybe 30 minutes.

I felt horrible after my c-section.  I was in pain, nauseated, and dizzy.  Some women feel great after and others don't.  The first night was rough.  I also had a hard time urinating after my catheter was out.  Make sure you have help with the baby, you may not feel after.  Hope yours goes smoothly and good luck!

  • I had a planned c-section. After DS came out, they showed him to me and DH went over to the incubator where they assessed him, gave him his vit K shot, and the antibiotic in his eyes. After everything was found to be normal, DH came over with him and placed him on my chest. A few min later, DH and baby went to the nursery (they finished sewing me up). I went straight back to the L&D room. They told me if I was planning on BFing, they were going to bring him in right away so I could start. Within minutes of getting back to my room, DH came in, but I immediately started vomitting from the meds, and did so for about 8 hours straight, so they never brought DS in (I felt so horrible I told them to leave him in the nursery). However with DD, it was very similar. DH came walking in with DD about 15 min after I got to my room.

This. Also, be prepared that with all the medicine and the surgery you might feel sick. I was vomiting the whole time during my c section, so once LO was all wrapped and ready my mother was holding him because i was in my own world just throwing up all over the place and praying that they stoped giving me more blood clotting medicine. Thats what was making me sick, im combo with the EPI & i will tell you, vomiting while your laying flat and cant feel anything .. scariest thing thats ever happened to me :/

  • I had an emergency CS, but H made it very clear that we wanted immediate skin to skin time with LO so, once they pulled him out of me, they wiped him off, weighed him and then handed him to H and he put LO in his shirt, against his chest and they allowed him to walk to recovery with him. When I got to recovery they gave him to me to hold and they rolled me and LO up to our permanent room. There they gave him his first bath and showed me and H how to bathe him safely. they brought LO to the nursery after all of this and me and H went to sleep.

  • I had a scheduled C-section that went very quickly.  In at 7:29am, baby born at 8:04, I was in recovery by 8:30am.  As with some other posters, I had nausea during delivery (BP dropped) but the anesthesiologist gave me nausea meds that had it under control in a minute.  Scariest time of my life because I thought I'd either pass out or vomit and yeah, being flat on your back=scary!!  DD was shown to me immediately after delivery, then given her APGAR etc in the same room, and returned to us.  We got to have her lay on my chest for probably 10 min or so while they sewed me up, then she and DH left to go have her bath.  I met up with them in recovery where she was finishing up her bath with DH.  They immediately gave her to me to nurse etc. Oh, and I'd asked to see the lactation consultant that day, she happened to be there so we had help the very first time to get the latch right :)  (It took a couple weeks, but huge to have such a great start).  In our hospital the baby was with us the entire time with the exception of her Hep B shot the next morning.

A couple of things about recovery: do get up and walk when they tell you.  it's really not that bad.  Take any and all pain meds they offer - you will be happy you did and they do not affect the baby adversely.  It sounds silly but I believe they helped me stay calm those first 2 weeks which was huge for getting a good start as a new mom.  Lastly, take the stool softener.  I had to wait an entire week to go and it was a NIGHTMARE.  Literally worse than the delivery.  You do not want to strain like that with all the internal stitches.

Overall if I had it to do again, I'd do it the exact same way.  Best of luck to you!

  • I had an unplanned c-section. Once baby was out, they showed him to us o er the curtain. Then the pediatrician took him and they did the apgars. Then they called dh over and he got to watch them weigh LO and swaddle him. Dh then carried him over to me (they were delivering the placenta and sewing me up) and I got to see him close up. I am nit quite sure what happened next as I got very woozy and they turned up my oxygen quickly. Once they were done, they took me tongue recover room. Dh and LO were there with me--LO was in a bassinet next to me. I was in pretty bad shape from the epi so I couldn't hold him quite yet, but dh didThe recovery nurse came to take LO for a bath and dh went with her. I took the moment to text my parents, lol. When dh came back with LO, they brought him to md for breastfeeding. It was about 2 hours after he was pulled out. Around the same time, I could start to wiggle my toes so the moved me to the maternity ward. I held LO as we were wheeled through the halls. It was all kind of a blur.

  • I had an unplanned c/s and once DD was out she went with DH to the nursery because she needed a little help breathing. I took a while to be sewn up because DD had pooped while coming out of me so I needed to be "irrigated". Then I went to recovery for about an hour then I was taken to my room and DD and DH met me there.

  • After ds was taken out, they weighed him then placed him on me, I kissed his tiny fingers and then ds and dh went to nursery. They were waiting for me in recovery room where dh fed him (strick formula fed) then we all went to my room where they bathed him. pretty easy and straight forward. scheduled csection are very easy.
  • I knew I was getting a c-section.....LO was handed right to DH and she stayed with us while I was stitched up and then was taken to the nursery for 10minutes while I was taken to recovery and she was brought right back and stayed with us until I had them bring her to the nursery so I could sleep
