How are you a "bad" mom?

I still let my almost 7 month old take his naps in his swing. We tried a few weeks ago to switch him to his crib for naps but he would wake up half way through and not go back to sleep. In his swing, if he wakes, he always goes back to sleep.

Also I don't make him take that nasty Poly-Vi-Sol that the Pedi wants him to take everyday. Bad mom. :)

Re: How are you a "bad" mom?

  • Careful, my using the phrase "bad mom" in jest opened a can of worms a week or two ago, LOL!

To rehash that drama, I'm a bad mom because my toddler eats sweets, fast food and packaged dinners and drinks juice (all in moderation), because I sit in the backseat with him at 19 months old, because we put off sleep training and weren't that committed to it so we rock him to sleep (or drive him around sometimes for naps on weekends) and he sleeps in our bed, and because he watches TV.

  • My son is currently whining and fussing in his crib right now because he woke up too early from his nap.  I'm not ready to go get him.  So, I'm letting him work it out.  I'll get him a bit.  But he's just going to have to wait.

    I am a bad mom.  :)

  • My 19 mo old still sleeps in my bed for naps and nighttime.

We didn't "make" my son eat what we served until he was ready to come around this past fall at close to four.  He had a WCM allergy we discovered at one which didn't make it easier and I thought it was best to follow his lead.  His diet wasn't full of unhealthy foods, but it was very restricted.

  • Bennett probably has wayyy too many sweets in his diet. He is the pickiest eater, but is always up for a snack!

We are currently lying down with him until he falls asleep in his new big boy bed (and haven't been strict about him going right back into that bed when he comes in with us in the middle of the night).

When I'm exhausted, I ask him which movie he wants to watch :)

I always forget to put an extra set of clothes in his diaper bag and he's had some issues with his pull-ups lately.

    Need more?! :)

  • The only place my son gets a good nap is in the car, so if he is ultra cranky, I drive around til he falls asleep and then pull over in the Micky D's parking lot for an hour until he wakes up.

  • Ummm, where should I start?  I let him pretty much eat whatever he wants.  Including waaay too many crackers, chocolate milk, etc.  I let him watch tv and sit in the big part of the cart at the store.  I get starred at for that one.  I buy him way too many toys.  We don't need any more toys or balls, but if he sees one at the store I'm a sucker for that crap.

The staff at Jack Newman's breastfeeding clinic told me when DS was less than a month old not to bother with sterilizing. I was a bit shocked, but I didn't hesitate to follow their advice (most of the time).

My big "bad mom" confession is that I let him watch way too much tv. The kid has a favorite movie and can ask for five different shows. No kidding. Ugh.

  • We let Andrew watch way too much tv.  He started climbing out of his crib so we converted it to a toddler bed. He won't stay in his bed so we wait for him to fall asleep on the couch and carry him to bed.  This means he is going to bed at 10 instead of 8 ugh!!!

  • I use a Bundle Me in our infant seat.  I'm usually a stickler for car seat safety -- I'm the crazy lady who still has my 3 year old rear-facing.  But I see nothing *practically* wrong with the Bundle Me, especially compared to her wearing a coat (which I have to take off Kira to keep her in securely).  I just don't see how those shower cap thingies keep babies warm enough, and a coat seems less safe and logistically harder on a small baby.  So I made a decision that works for us. :eeek:  I've read nothing but deathly criticism about those things!

Oh, and along those lines, I hate my Boulevard in my car.  After my car was stolen in November I replaced my Marathon -- specifically chosen in 2009 because it fit better in my car than the Boulevard did -- with a Boulevard, expecting it to be used in a minivan for the next 6 years.  I'm tempted to turn it FF in my car, but then I don't think I'd be able to get Kira to turn back if we ever finally get a minivan, and I want her to stay RF.  So for now I have a pricey car seat that I hate.  I'd have a similarly hard time getting a 1 year old in it (indeed she was 15 months when we tested her in it, and decided on the Marathon instead), so it's not just her size that's the issue, is the damn seat fitting in the car.  OK, that was just a vent, not a bad mommy, LOL.

I allow, heck, encourage Smudge and Grant kisses (supervised, of course). When LO sees a dog he likes, he opens his mouth, expecting/hoping for a kiss.

LO can unlock my iPad and knows which games he likes and how to get to them, including Fruit Ninjas, which includes several screens.

LO gets a bath once a week. He is not stinky. His hair is not oily/greasy. I was body parts as needed during the week. Sure, if he gets gross sooner, I toss him in the tub as needed, but, otherwise. . .

  • She watches way too much Dora and eats too much snack-type foods, but she's super picky right now, so I'm just happy that she's eating. She would eat chicken nuggets every night if we would let her or we tell her everything is pizza so she'll eat it. She sleeps with a stuffed animal, a blanket and a pair of dirty socks. Yes, dirty socks. (my kid is so weird! Lol!)

  • Still rock to sleep for naps and bed. I still sit in the backseat with her. She LOVES Barney and while I usually reserve it for times like prepping dinner/showering, lately I am useless so I am turning to Barney way more. I don't let her have sweets or overly processed foods and I am kind of neurotic about her diet being as healthy and balanced as possible, but Dh and I have AWFUL eating habits - great role models, eh? I didn't follow my pedis advice with high allergy foods - instead I did my own research and offered them when I was comfortable. I let her have free roam of the house (supervised, of course) and play with whatever she wants (as long as it is safe and baby proof) - she empties my pantry and my cupboards and makes a huge mess and I don't care. My house is a disaster lately and I HATE it!

Can my LO come over to play with your horse, I mean dog??? There is a mastiff at the dog park we go to. Sheba is a former mill breeder. She LOVES LO. Her owner says that Sheba likely thinks LO is one of her puppies. LO loves her and she is so sweet with him!

  • You guys are my kind of mom!  I sit in the back with DD and she sleeps in our bed.  We never even fully set up the crib.  Of course, we are moving Friday for the third time since she was born. No sleep training here, she is an easy going baby.

Edited to add: we let her watch Harry the Bunny on my I phone and the Ipad commercial, because she stops crying when she hears the music.

Years of trying and treatment, IVF#1 brought us our darling C!
  • I feel like I don't spend enough time on the floor with the kids.  I'm starting my own business b/c we need the money and I'm at the kitchen table a lot working on stuff.  Luckily there are two of them and they play very well together and by themselves, but I feel really badly.  And while we're admitting - sometimes I'm not on the floor with them that much because I feel like I don't know how to play with them/what to do.  Creates a lot of feelings of guilt.
  • 1)  It's 3:37pm and I just poured myself a glass of wine.  (Bad day, bad week, bad year?)  I'm having a little pity party for myself today.  Sorry.

  • DS gets a bath once a week.  I always wipe him down head to toe, but he just doesn't need to be in the tub that much.

If he cries in the middle of the night or like last night had a 2am bottle, I just let him sleep with me for the rest of the night.

He slept in his swing until he was 8 months.  He has finally busted the motor on the swing and it no longer swings, but he loves sitting in it and I turn on ESPN and he takes a nap.

We don't have plans to go overboard with baby-proofing.  We'll lock cabinet doors that have chemicals and put things in the electrical outlets.  Personally, I think our neighbors house looks ridiculous with foam things on all 4 corners of every piece of furniture, and yet when their kid hits their head its not on the part that is protected anyway.

  • I don't get points in the healthy eating department.  I still give my 19 month old three bottles of WCM everyday (including one before nap and another before bed).  I tried to take away the bottle at 16 months and again at 18 months and it was a knock down drag out.  She cried until she threw up.  I wish I listened to the pedi and phased out the bottle at 1 year old.   Oh... we also allow her to "french kiss" the dogs.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp30_xrSoOs

  • I let my child roam in the backyard without paying much attention.  If he wants to play outside while I'm making breakfast/lunch he can have at it.  If he's too quiet for too long I check things out, but otherwise he's on his own.

I still nurse him before naps and bedtime.  He can fall asleep on his own, but he prefers to nurse.  This means my DH has only put him down a handful of times in 20 months.

I let him have snacks and drinks in the car and have since he started solids.  I also don't even vaguely pay attention to "ages 3 and up" warnings on things.  If I think he'll like playing with it, he does.

  • What a great post!  Makes me feel "normal" not a bad mom.  Smile

My kids love TV.  I try to limit, but we get more than 2 hours a day some days.  When they were little, I let them watch a Baby Signing Time DVD while they processed their food or they would spit it up when they rolled on their bellies.  The habit stuck and they watch DVDs during breakfast and lunch.  It gives me time to check e-mail, put on make-up, etc.  I do insist that we have dinner at the table as a family though!

I sometimes let them cry when I'M not ready for naptime to be over!!  Especially if I've checked on them and they don't NEED anything.  I need my ME time!

  • We are keeping Ella in a crib for a couple more months cause she plays in there while we sleep a little longer in the morning.  She has been in there playing for about 1.5 hours before (usually it's just a half hour or so).  I say if she isn't crying and having playtime with her stuffed animals, she's fine!
