High-Risk Pregnancy

Please help... Polyhydraminos?

Just diagnosed came from the ultrasound and was diagnosed with polyhydrominos.  I just googled it and I'm freaking out & cannot see my Dr. until tomorrow at 4 pm.  The technician said my amniotic fluid level was a 25.  Does anyone else know more or have this?  Please help...

Re: Please help... Polyhydraminos?

  • I have polyhydramnios. I was told that my only two big concerns should be pre-term labor and cord prolapse. As a precaution, my OB had me do a round of beta shots to expedite maturity of baby's lungs.

I too Google'd poly and got a little worried. However, keep in mind that something like 65% of all cases are just random and have no explanation. Not every case of polyhydramnios ends up being a big problem, let alone a worst case scenario.

    Hope this helps?

  • I had polyhydraminos with my 2nd child. It put me at high risk and they also explained that if the fluid wasn't as much as it was with me they could do an amino to try and get rid of some of the excess fluid.  Only problem with the amino is it has its risks as well, such as 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage. My little boy is fine today and growing like a normal child, but he also had IUGR as well. The polyhydraminos put a lot of pressure on my back and caused my belly to be constantly tight, but I was able to make it to 32 weeks with it. They kept constant tabs on me and made sure they watched him weekly. They of course try to scare you with the whole "this could be a sign of down syndrome" and what not, but I definitely can tell you that having polyhydraminos doesn't mean down syndrome, as most women who have it they never figure out why or what caused it. They still have no clue what caused mine, but I've had 2 pregnancies since in which neither have had polyhydraminos. So, the good thing is just because you have it once doesn't mean you will have it again. Just try and take some reassurance that most of the time they have no clue why or what causes it. Sometimes your body just does crazy things. I know it's definitely scary to go through and I'm sorry you're going through it. :( ((hugs))

  • Thank you so much for sharing what you have gone through, its definitely going to help me sleep tonight and make it to my Drs. appt tomorrow afternoon.  I'll try to keep you updated.  Thanks again.
  • I had Polydramnios with my 4th.  Tried to go into labor twice, and was put in the hospital until contractions stopped.  Delivered at 39 wks, after 16 hours of labor, they couldn't tell where the cord was, and he was in distress, so we went to the OR.  He is healthy, happy almost 3 year old:)  I just know I was super uncomfortable at the end, because of the fluid.  I am pregnant with #5....and unexpected issues again.  I have complete placenta previa, in addition it is also anterior.  I am almost 27 wks, so we are just waiting at this point.  i am aware I may lose my uterus, I'm OK with that, just hoping for a safe delivery for her sake, and hopefully not to early.  do keep us posted, and have a great rest of your week.
  • momof4+ - my thoughs & prayers are with you and your baby!

I went to the Dr. today and he wants me to get another scan next week (I never imagined having more than 2 ultrasounds & already we are up to 5).  He is going to keep and eye on the fluid levels and I'm coming in every week now instead of every 2 even though I'm only 31 weeks now.

I appreciate everyone sharing their stories and I appreciate the support and help :o) Keep me posted!

  • I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios at my 33 week appointment. My amniotic fluid was measuring at 32 instead of in the teens where they want it. This was the 2nd appointment where it was high enough to warrant concern. It wasn't high before 28 weeks, which is when I had my last gestational diabetes test. That test was normal, so they think it could be a late onset of GD. I have to go for another 1 hour test within the next few days.

I also have a Cleft Palate, so they think it's possible that Bug might have one as well and is hindering his/her ability to swallow. It could be kidneys not functioning correctly. Then they brought up a possibility of a chromosomal abnormality. Needless to say Google was my best and worst friend last night. So I am off to maternal fetal Friday at 1 for a NST, ultrasound and a talk with the doctors. My DH can't go with me tomorrow since he can't get off of work on late notice, so my Mom is coming along for support.

  • I just wanted to give a quick update...I know what you mean by the ultrasounds...I just had my 7th one.  And what a joyous day....my placenta moved.  I way laying there crying, tears of joy, of course.  Dont know what the doc will say about a VBAC versus c-section.  But, at this point, doesn't matter to me.  As long as baby is gonna be OK:)  Can't wait to see our little girl, it has been 18 years since I have had a girl...so this is pretty exciting!  Keep your chin up, your almost there.:)
