I was invited to one of those "no presents" b-day parties and wanted to bring a book for the child since the mother is a friend of mine. Is a three year old too old to have an interest in board books?
Do you mean too old? No, not at all, but at three they can usually handle regular books just fine, too. Don't feel you have to limit yourself to board books. Is it a boy or a girl?

haha Yes I meant too old. It's a boy. I wanted to give him some books that are a favorite of DS and they happen to all be board books!

Sorry, you said too old. I don't know what I was reading, it's early.
DD is 31 months- and loves the Dr. Suess books. she handles regular hardback books just fine. Also softcover books. So you necessary don't have to limit yourself to board books.
I think books are the best bday presents EVER. personally.

no you were right!! I just went in and changed it. :-)
DD - almost 2 1/2 - def has a preference for non board books. She is loving the "first reader" soft paper backs. I would be hesitant to get board books.
At 3 D considered board books baby books and would have nothing to do with them
That's funny! Parker has no cares what book she reads but maybe that is because we have a 15 month old and have a ton of board books out.
To answer OP- How about Sandra Boyton books. They're great for a young toddler but also are fun for preschoolers. Barnyard Dance and The Hippos Go Berserk are fav's in this house.
Some of Finn's favorites right now are any old Curious George stories, Lyle Lyle Crocodile stories, Mike Mulligan And His Steam Shovel and Katy and the Big Snow (I like classic stories a lot). These are all great, because they move beyond the sing-songy simplicity of a lot of the younger books, but aren't so advanced that they're over his head.
DS is almost 3, and I let him have and read regular books when I'm around or reading with him. He loves to read books while in his bed at naptime, and I let him have a regular paperback book from the library one time and he ripped all the pages out. That was the first time he'd done that, but now he only gets his board books at naptime. So for him, he still gets a combo.
Would I go out of my way to purchase a board book for a 3yo? No. Would I think anything was wrong if someone gave my 3yo a board book? Depends on the books.
There are some great board books that DD1 still enjoys- Sandra Boynton is an excellent example. However, she is really gravitating towards "real books" recently. She is obsessed with our collection of Curious George books!!

The books I were going to get were Sandra Boynton books. DS LOVES them.
DS still has some favorite board books that we read, but he prefers regular books and he's 2 1/2. He We just bought a silly book that he likes from Target called Bear in Underwear. That might be a cute gift book.

ditto MrsH.
I would go with a more pre school oriented book.
