Pro-EBF Pediatricians in Bham?

So, I'm sure all pediatricians encourage breastfeeding, but I'm looking for a pediatrician who is very pro-EBF and wouldn't take the suggestion to supplement lightly. I love our pediatrician, but I got some advice that I'm questioning and would like a 2nd opinion.

(If you're curious, DS had his 4 month checkup on Friday and weighed 11lbs 4 oz. Doc was concerned and suggested that I feed DS anything he could keep down over the next few weeks and bring him back to check his weight. Well, I've come to find out that DS can eat well over 50oz/day & when I reported this back to the doc, he seemed pleased. (I've been pumping and bottle feeding the past few days so that I can track how much he's getting.) This seems outrageous to me-- my freezer stash is now totally gone and I'm a wreck. I obviously can't keep up, so doc is suggesting I supplement. I don't want to unless I absolutely have to.)

Thanks!

  • Sorry, I don't know of any B'ham pedis. But, maybe you might contact someone in the local La Leche League or a local lactation consultant for help?

Does your DS keep his BM down? Just curious as your Pedi mentioned to feed him "anything he could keep down".

That surprises me that your Pedi suggested supplementing too- the only reason I'd think a Pedi would be this concerned is if your DS drastically dropped off the weight charts?  Mason was lower 5th percentile for weight until his 1st birthday when he finally inched up to 10th percentile. Our Pedi wasn't concerned as it seemed to just be his growth pattern. If there had been a significant drop, that would have caused us to be alarmed. Now, he's finally caught up to 50th {well at least he had at his 18th mo checkup, we'll see the 2-yr in a couple of weeks)

Also, I know you mentioned that your freezer stash is now gone. This is just some unsolicited advice, but make sure you don't forget to put DS to the breast as much as possible so your own supply doesn't go down. Whenever I had to break into the freezer stash, it seemed like I had a drop in pumping and had to always work to get it back up.  Even if you think you're "empty" it will help your body to stimluate making more.  50oz a day sounds like your DS is on a growth spurt and your body will absolutely have to have his suckling signals to be able to keep up with his demands.
