Update to mental illness/family problems

So, I tried to call my mom to explain to her that we just could not take on my niece right now. She did not answer, so I left a message saying we could help a bit, but that we were not in a place to provide primary care for a 6 yr old. 

I never heard back. I called again. Nothing. This is how my family deals with issues. Totally ignores you until you are helpful again. Screw 'em. I know all of them are pissed at us and are probably talking sh!t about us, but whatever. We do what we can, and just could not take on such responsibility right now.

For pete's sake, I barely had time to shower twice last week let alone make sure all the needs of a 6 yr old are taken care of! 

Thanks again for all your support and kind words. It really does make situations like this easier to know that I am NOT crazy and evil for the choices I make.

    Good for you for saying (and knowing!) what you could or couldn't handle.  I didn't reply before b/c I had no experience for you, but I totally sympathize with you.  Sorry your family is acting this way now, but it sounds like you did the right thing.

    That sounds like something my family would do-ignore me until they heard what they wanted to hear.  Good for you for putting your immediate family first.  It can be so hard to say no, but sometimes we just have to!

    What a messy situation!  I think that you are doing the right thing for you and your immediate family.  I hope that your niece's grandmother can get her!!
