Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I want to cry every single time i pump.

I'm an exclusive pumper. yay me. (eye roll)  I HATE IT!  It makes me feel dirty and molested every single time i do it. I even get a gaggy/barfy feeling in the back of my throat when i do it.  30 mins in the morning.  30 mins at night.   Crying 32 oz. a day.

Is there anyone else out there who has this kind of visceral reaction? :(

Re: I want to cry every single time i pump.

  • You pump only 2 times a day and get 32 ounces?!?

I can not feel bad for you because of the sheer volume of milk you are able to produce.  I pump 5 times a day and am lucky to get the 15 ounces I need for day care the next day!

  • No - I actually still think it's pretty awesome every time I do it.  That's a fantastic volume, though.  You're very lucky.

Thank you for posting this. I thought I was weird and haven't ever mentioned it to anyone, but I HATE the feeling it gives me. When I BF I feel fulfilled. When I pump, I feel icky.

  • sorry.  i have big gigantic scary milk boobs. For realz.  way bigger than my son's head.  Indifferent
  • You pump only 2x a day for 30 mins a session and you get 32oz??  I would kill to pump twice a day and get that much!  (maybe I'm reading it wrong).

I nurse DS when I'm with him (except in the a.m. b/c he's still asleep).  So, I pump in the a.m. before work, 3x's a work and then once in the evening before bed.  So, I pump 5 times and get about 25oz.  I don't enjoy pumping, but I don't HATE it.

Have you considered switching to formula if it really bothers you that much?  I think it's more important for you to be happy and not stressed about it!

  • wow.  I feel HORRIBLE for all of you who have to pump that much!  I would DIE!  DIE.  No way in hell would i be on that life sucker that often! :(   Twice a day is torture enough for me (and i really should do it more b/c my boobs could use a halfway day pump, but i refuse)  I have contemplated quitting, but then i look at my little boy and he's doing so well on the milk.  I can't bare to think of quitting.

btw, my advice to anyone else out there would be to quit if it were bothering her so much, but i can't get myself to do it! argghh!!

  • i don't mind it- i EP'd with #1 (after 3 months) and i'd get 60+ oz per day. it was weirdly glorious.

now i pump & BF with #2 & i still get 30+ oz per day. pumping = relief.

    Um, yeah.  Major jealousy here.

  • I wish I had big gigantic scary milk boobs.

But seriously, consider switching to formula if it bothers you that much. You shouldn't be in that much discomfort, and I don't think that's something that will go away in time.

    So jealous.  So very jealous.

But to answer your question -- I do not enjoy pumping but it doesn't give me an icky feeling.  Sometimes if I haven't drank enough water I will get sharp pains when I pump.  Obviously pumping doesn't have a satisfying bond that BFing provides but it requires hard work and dedication just the same.  However if it truly UPSETS you I would suggest looking into supplementing with formula.  Your well being is very important to providing to the well being of your child.

  • YES!  I dont get nauseous or anything.  But I hate pumping!  I pump 3 times a day.  But only 20 mins in the morning, 20 mins at work and 30 mins at night. Only getting about 24oz :(

  • What??

I am super jealous!!! I pump 5 times a day and get maybe 10 ounces, which is why she only gets 2 BM bottles a day now. I would be in heaven if I could only pump 2 times a day and get that much milk.

Anyways, I HATE pumping. For awhile it made me feel sad when I would sit down and pump, kind of like putting me in a bad mood. I blamed it on the hormones.

  • Ugh!  I pump 3-4xs at work (12hr shift) and only get 8-10oz.  I have to pump on my days off to make sure I keep up with her while I'm at work.  SHe will only eat fresh milk, so I'm guessing formula will be a no go for her as well (dang picky baby!).

To answer you question, kind of.  If I eat while pumping, I get really nauseated for some reason.  I try to keep myself distracted while pumping (reading, watching TV, etc).  I also hate it and am jealous of your scary big milk boobs!

  • I love pumping. I would ep if i didnt like bf at all. I don't feel anything at all when I pump and I get both hands free.

I still don't believe 32 oz in two sessions. that is insanity. I pump 2x a day in addition to bf and get about 12 oz and i thought that was a serious oversupply.

  • Holy mushrooms, people!

I hated pumping and wanted to cry when I pumped, but only because I'd be glued to that pump for 4-5 hours a day and maybe get 3-5 ounces. And then I cried again when I BFed because my nips were so raw and inflamed from all the pumping. Once I stopped pumping, with the understanding that if it meant my baby would get it in formula instead...

Magic. Turns out I just don't respond to the pump. She BF JUST FINE, it stopped hurting, and the amount of formula we had to give her nosedived and never returned.

My LLL leader told me that though she exBF both her kids, she never got ANYTHING from a pump.

But as to the idea of feeling dirty and molested -- no, I didn't. Maybe try to work some cognitive therapy tricks, like looking at a picture of your baby or etc. I can't believe you even have let downs while feeling nauseous and molested.

  • I'm jealous of the moo cows and bitter about my milkless boobs.

  • That is amazing that you only have to pump twice a day.

Potentially dumb question, but is it too late to switch to BF'ing?

I'm not a fan of pumping. There is something about seeing my boobs pulled through a machine that skeeves me out. After I get everything set up and rolling, I usually pull my shirt over my chest so that I can't see the damage and I try to focus on something else (i.e. TheBump) and just wait for it to be over. Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly violated, it makes me feel a little better to hold my chest while I do it.

i did with #1- i donated over 2,500 oz because alex had a dairy allergy & i'd already pumped that much by the time we figured it out.:

however-  only donated because she couldn't drink it- i pumped/froze enough by the time she was 6 months to get her to 1 year. i plan to do the same thing this time around. but i might bf longer because brynn actually prefers it (unlike alex).

  • I hate it too. It's not so bad now that it means I get 2 breaks a day at work. But when I was home with DS I would get a queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. I hated it.

But you are lucky that that is all you have to do.  I finally give up after I spent 3 weeks pumping every 2 hours, and drinking the tea and eating the oatmeal and still wasn't making enough.

I know you hate, hate, hate it, but what if you did add the middle of the day pump and started storing it so that you only have to do it for a bit longer, then can be done and just use the stored milk.  Kind of like a light at the end of the tunnel.

Oh and the other thing that gets me through is I have a pumping book. I ONLY read it while I'm pumping so it gives me something to look forward to.

  • Some really great suggestions here.  Thanks!! :)  I like the idea of having a "pump book" to read that is only for that time of day.  I have to admit, it isn't easy to balance the cones and stuff in front of my lap while i'm pumping, but I'm sure i can manage a book.  I've managed the laptop before. lol

And yes.  I really do only pump twice a day.  I've got those boobies trained.  But to the person who asked about my letdown while feeling so gross...?  I'm not sure i ever really feel 'let down'.  I never was able to breastfeed with a decent latch, so i'm not sure what it even feels like??  My boobs get a lot of pressure sometimes, and i get tingly in my armpits sometimes, but it's not always when i'm pumping.  Sometimes i don't feel that at all, though the milk still comes.

I also pull my shirt over so i don't have to look at it, like another poster mentioned.  I also cover the pump with a few blankets so i don't hve to HEAR that damn thing!

Well... on this note, it's time to get to 'work'.  Pump and bed.

    Thanks, everyone, who replied.
