Two Under 2

Is it doable?

Sometimes I think I really want to join the 2 under 2 club but I am just wondering how doable it is is with finances.. then again does it really get easier later on? probably not ;(

Re: Is it doable?

  • Honestly?  I don't notice that big of a difference in finances.   We are cloth diapering and that does definitely help on diapering costs......

  • One of the big reasons we decided to have our kids close together was to save money.  We knew we wanted three kids and we also know that we will never make a lot of money because DH is a middle school teacher and I plan to teach once our kids are in school, since being a SAHM was a priority for us it made sense for me to stay home with all three kids until they are in school.   Once they are in school I will be able to work without ever having to take maternity leave etc. There was almost no real difference financially for us (besides a small increase in grocery & diaper costs etc). when DD#2 was born because we already had everything from DD#1, the only thing we bought was a double stroller!  Obviously having two children is more expensive than having one child, but for us, having them close together is cost effective.

  • It's doable, but I highly encourage you to look at your finances and your situation.  I went back to work which meant daycare for two and this alone is an expense that I will have until they both reach the age to enter school, about $300 a week.

Our second preganacy was unexpected and happened very close to the first, my daughters are 10.5 months apart so I didn't have the recovery time with expenses that I wish I had, although having two girls meant hand-me-downs and having almost everything I needed for baby #2.  This was a big help with expenses, but I finished paying off medical bills for one pregnancy and then had another set right behind.  Our family isn't struggling but I was never a coupon mom and now I clip as much as I can and budget like I never did before.

It just takes a little more effort and sacrifce on our part but watching them grow together is amazing.  And I hear it gets better from other mother's in the same situation.  Just make sure you have a plan and you will be fine.

  • It really depends on your own situation.  For us having kids close together was easier.  Childcare is set (we have an au pair) our healthcare is also set (once you have the family plan that is the highest amount you will pay) and we happen to be able to reuse clothes from DS1 for DS2 and from DD1 to DD2.... everyone is different though... look at your finances, and it might be doable for you too :)

  • I'd vote wait. I am very glad we waited until we were financially secure to have kids. Kids only get more expensive with age, and as time goes on, you and/or your DH will be more established in your career (s) and making more money.
