XP-Those who banked cord blood?

Did your Dr charge a collection fee?  Was it covered by insurance?  I just got a bill for $200 from my OB for cord blood collection and I'm a little ticked that no one ever mentioned that this charge might not be covered by insurance.  Am I crazy for thinking that?  I mean, I still feel like its worth it considering our family history, and nothing could compare to that peace of mind.  But its just annoying!

Re: XP-Those who banked cord blood?

  • i would be surprised to find out that insurance covered cord blood banking.  is it with a private bank like viacord, or did you donate to a public bank?

  • I don't think we were charged anything, but this makes me wonder if I should go take another look at the insurance statement to see if this is one of the many items on that list.

ETA: Sorry, I just realized you seem to be talking about banking it for YOURSELF... we donated ours so of course we weren't charged anything. If you banked it for yourself, $200 seems super cheap! I've heard as much as $5K for the cost of keeping your own.

  • In my pregnancy welcome handbook, it does say there is a $150 fee. I haven't received a bill yet and the OB is a family friend, so I'm not sure if he didn't charge me because of that, or if I have not received it yet. I don't think insurance would cover that though.

I'm a lurker, I just wanted to clarify for the OP, she was saying that her OB charged the $200 - a completely separate charge from the fees of the cord banking company.

Right.  This was a fee charged by the OB for the collection.  We paid CBR separately.

  • Your OB has to pay a submission fee just to send it away for you, ours charges $200 as well.  That is on top of the banking fee and the yearly fee.

Really? I never heard of that...even when I did a 6 week clinical in OB during PA school. You all know they get about $200-300 fee from the cord blood company for each baby's blood banked? Mine actually refuses the kickback because the group thinks it's unethical to sway you one way or another.

I don't think this is true.  At least not for us.  DH called the courier himself and sent the package off after the c/s.  The OB had nothing to do with that.  In fact, the nurses handled all the prep and packaging.  All that the Dr did was actually collect the cord blood in the bag and hand it off to a nurse.  And yes, they do get a kickback from the cord blood company as well which is why I think this fee is so tacky when we are talking about something that took less than 5 min to do and otherwise would have just been medical waste.  Whatever... guess I should have thought to ask ahead of time.

  • I'm not sure if we were charged a fee, I only checked my EOB to see if we owed anything out of pocket and didn't pay attention to the details. But, the paperwork we got from the bank did say that the OB would charge to collect. I also saw that info when we first looked into banking.

It is annoying to hear that the docs get a kick back, it's not like they "sold" us the plan.
