Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 yrs old and getting a filling. Anyone else deal with it?

When his teeth started coming in, his upper left tooth (looking at him) was slightly discolored. He went to the dentist at 18 months and they said it was because of his prematurity and it shouldn't be a big issue.

We went for a check up yesterday and the tooth is breaking down and has a soft spot. So, they want to scrape it and put a filling on it. I know it's going to be painful for him and I don't know how we should do this.  I'm not going, DH will take him because I can't. They said they'll have to put him on the Papoose Board because he gets violent when they brush his teeth.

Is there anything we can do to help him? He'll be given a local and laughing gas and DH will have to help hold him down while they do it.

Also, would it be better to do it in the morning before nap or in the afternoon after? He generally naps between 10 and 11am waking at 12 or 1.

Thanks

  • Honestly, getting fillings has never bothered me more than the pain from the local. Especially if they aren't drilling. If they give him gas, he may just go to sleep. I always did. Things that hurt are usually root canals or teeth pulled. Just my opinion.

When is he in the best mood? My DS would do better in the morning. Plus, that gives it time for the local to wear off so he could eat a good dinner.

  • DH and I went alone with DD1 when she had a filling, a little older than 2. I would  not have allowed the papoose board, no matter what. That would have scarred her forever. We each sat on one side of her. We held her hands, and I laid my head on her chest and talked to her. She screamed the whole time and was very upset, but they did not do any anesthetic at all (the cavity was very small). I think with laughing gas, he'll do fine. I probably would insist on something next time, but they prefer not to give drugs if not necessary. Since hers was so small, it took less than 5 minutes start to finish. FWIW, I don't think hers hurt that bad, I think the noises were scary and that's what bothered her so much.
