Vehicle Travel - storing things on top of a van?

Do you need to have rails on the top of your van to install some sort of storage bag up top?

We're thinking of taking our van from WA to MN this summer but in order to have everything we'll need, I think we'll have to store up top. Our van doesn't have rails up top. Is that the only way to put a storage bin (think Yakima) or bag up there?

    I believe you do need the rails for the hard plastic ones. You might be able to use the soft canvas weather proof ones. I know with my van if anything is obstructing the automatic doors from closing it will not close.
