Gender roles...

What does your LO do or like that is not considered part of the "norm" for his or her gender?

Sydney loves trucks. The louder the better. The bigger the better. She will stop playing if she hears a bus or truck coming down the street. Forget about if she hears a motorcycyle. She KNOWS what they sound like.

I was just thinking about it this morning when the trash truck came. I have to pick her up to take her to the windows to watch it. When they are in front of the house, we stand at the french doors (all glass) and she waves to the guys while they pick ours up. Once in a while they wave back. I think it's cute, but I wonder what they think.

  • DD#1 is big into Buzz Lightyear, Star Wars and the Hulk which are supposedly all boy things. She's getting a Buzz Lightyear cake for her birthday.

  • DD adores Shrek -- all Shrek movies, stuff.  She thinks he's hilarious and always has.  She plays with cars and trucks and trains but not obsessively.  She does so more with DS now.  Of course, DS has walked around with DD's headbands on or with a purse or my bracelet too.  Eh, whatever.

  • Ada is fascinated by trucks and dolls alike.

I think that at this age they are completely blank slates - we are teaching them how to behave like a girl/boy.  Perhaps there are tendencies toward certain things - like a girl putting on bracelets or a boy liking trucks - and we think, "Oh, how girly/ boyish!" and nod with approval. If those same tendencies are toward things that contradict what we think of as "normal" gender roles then we raise an eyebrow.

  • I think most kids find the garbage truck fascinating for some reason.

Sienna loves Pete from Miceky Mouse Clubhouse. He makes her laugh. Who would have thought that she'd like the big bad brute.

  • L is at the age where other kids pick on things that gender bend. He chose on purpose to take Home Ec so he could learn to sew and cook. His friends were going to give him a hard time, but he tossed it back at them and said, hey,if you want to eat crappy food when you move out 'cause you can't cook, then whatever. And he told them being a chef is NOT girly (think Gordon Ramsey). His home ec class now has 20 boys and 4 girls. Go figure. L spends a lot of time watching his mentors on Food Network.....hmmm, chef perhaps?

My girls are always blurring the lines, to them nothing is yet distinctly boy or girl, the GI Joes and Barbies are always plotting something. And there are Hot Wheels everywhere, usually with a Littlest Pet Shop strapped on top. I hate stepping on Hot Wheels. And Lego...Confused

ETA: T has already said she wants to be a Firefighter (like dh) or RCMP officer (like uncle & grampa). And K is obsessed with hockey, or any sport that includes clobbering people. My shins are bruised from her "playing" sports.

  • Matt loves to clean. He follows our housekeeper around and cries "uh oh" when he sees a spot on the floor and will grab a towel to clean it. His favorite toy is his broom.

Matt also loves to wear my shoes.  He likes DH's shoes but he really likes my heels and will ask me to help him put them on.

Matt also has a doll that he carries around and will rock it and pat its back.

  • I can't think of anything. M loves his play kitchen, but he's a modern man so there's nothing weird about that.Stick out tongue
