Anyone not hear heartbeat?

i've had three ultrasounds now and have seen the little heartbeat flickering away. The doctor tried to listen for the heartbeat first today, but didn't pick anything up, so she did an actual ultrasound to see the heart.  She said everything looks great, but is it weird not to hear it on the doppler?

Re: Anyone not hear heartbeat?

  • I'm in the same boat.  I went in at 10w and they did an actual ultra sound, since they couldn't hear it.  They found it on screen and said everything looks good.  But I really want to hear it for myself, ya know?  We got back on the 1st and should get to hear it then.  If not, I'm seriously gonna freak a little...

  • I've read from pp that finding a heartbeat on doppler is not easy.  My doctor was able to find it at 9.5w, but I think from what I read, that is super rare and uncommon.  I have not had an u/s though, so he must have something "special".  I'd rather an u/s.

I wouldn't worry or stress over it, you saw your lo!!! :o)

  • With my first, I couldn't hear with a doppler until around 14 weeks because I had a tilted uterus. At that point the baby had gotten big enough to tip it forward and was big enough to hear it anyway.

Don't worry, as long as they can see it with an U/S you are fine!

I've also heard that not being stick thin and having an anterior placenta could also cause you not to be able to hear it!

  • Usually once your past 8 weeks you can hear it during an ultrasound.I'm surprised they didn't let you hear it then. Doppler is normal to not hear it before 14 weeks. A friend they couldn't hear it via doppler till 20 weeks due to her placenta.
  • My Dr couldnt hear it at 11w but did at 12w, I wouldn't worry too much if they can't hear it just yet, as long as its all good on the US!

  • My doc tried last week to hear the heartbeat for the first time and didn't have much luck.  She found it for just a few seconds.  She did an ultrasound to get a good read on the heartbeat since she likes to hear it for longer.  Our LO was moving all over the place, which she said explained why she couldn't get a good read.  She also told us going into it not to be disappointed or upset if we didn't hear it.  So I think its common not to be able to in the first tri.

  • For both of my ultrasounds, the doctors turned on the volume on the ultrasound machine and I was able to hear the heartbeat.  I don't know if this is typical or not, but we definitely heard it and I haven't had any doppler scans yet.

  • I am 12 weeks 5 days and went to my appt yesterday and had the exact same thing.  We could see the flicker of the heartbeat but couldn't pick it up on the doppler.  Dr. said that it was normal but it definitely freaked me out at first and was really happy that he grabbed the ultrasound machine.
  • no, it's not weird to not hear it using the doppler until later on. last pregnancy, they were able to hear it at 12 weeks but we'll see with this one. sometimes i wish they didn't try it on us so early so we don't freak if you can't hear it lol

  • I wouldn't sweat it too much. Since we have twins, we have an u/s every time to see two diff. hb's which a doppler can't do for us. Our doc hasn't even tried with a doppler and I don't know if he ever will. I figure if you have positive things on the u/s to think about, then stick with that!
