DD is crying every time she poops

I feel so awful for her. Her face turns red, she strains, and now she's crying every time she goes, and after a ton of work she'll just go one small, very formed and hard poo. Our pedi said to give her a sippy cup of water to 1)help her to learn to drink from a sippy and 2)supplement fluids when she's not hungry and getting breastmilk. Last night we did the thermometer trick, bicycled her legs, rubbed her belly. I am thinking of calling the pedi but what are some of your tricks if you've gone through the same thing?

  • Prunes--  either juice or puree.

  • if she's eating any type of cereal, it'll make her constipated. we've had to put prunes in with it since day one, and that has helped tremendously! but as for a right now solution, try prune juice. mix it 1:1 with some water and she should be going sometime this afternoon!
  • This sounds familiar.  We tried all the tricks and at the point that my DS was straining to hard he was bleeding when he would finally pass something I caved and the pedi said go for the miralax.  My DS can not handle ANY cereals at this point are we are back to constipation again.  We started doing 1/4 of an adult dosage of miralax (mixed in food or prune juice or BM) twice a day.  Once he was moving then we dropped down and now he gets about 1/3 of a dose once a day.

I just could not handle him being in so much pain and I was honestly starting to get concerned that he would just stop trying to go for fear it would hurt.

Good luck - drop all cereal, add water, prune/pears or the juice and then if all else fails ask the pedi about miralax.

  • My DD has been doing the exact same thing.  At first it was the bananas....it was making her too constipated.  Then we figured out that she had a few anal fissures (cuts on the anus) that was making it painful to go.  So we have been putting on Butt Paste every time we change her.  Also prunes for breakfast every other day and a water sippy at every meal.  The oatmeal has been making her a little constipated too, so we just don't put in as much at a meal.

Even still she'll cry a little, but it's a lot better than it was.  For us, it was a few culprits that was making her uncomfortable.  It's hard to see them go through this.  GL and I hope you find a way to make her feel better!

  • Def prunes...they work like a charm. Hope she feels better soon!
  • I give DS pear juice mixed w/ water in a sippy at most meals and it helps.  Prunes have worked too.

  • Prunes!!! I always tell DH I have a love hate relationship with them b/c they keep T regular but they make for some funky diapers lol. They've always worked for us. But a word of caution, I bought a bag of dried plums that was supposed to have the pits removed & there was one in there that I didn't discover until after pur?eing it and feeding it to DS. It was in his mouth! Scared the sh.. out of me. Now I check every single one before I pur?e it. And then I press each bite against the side of the container just to be sure. T's never gotten severly constipated but when I know he's getting there we take a four prong approach: prunes, bath, bm & then let him stand and play at the window or his music table. The activity gets things moving. Gl! It's so hard to see Los in pain :(
  • ditto on the prunes and pears!  i hope your Lo feels better soon.

  • Water never worked for us (DS had chronic constipation issues from 3 months till a couple weeks ago)  We did prune juice before solids were introduced and then once we started solids we began giving prunes and now we mix his morning oatmeal with half a container of prunes to keep him regular, it seems to be working very well.  When they are dealing with constipation they need additional sugar in their systems, the sugar helps draw moisture into the intestines and keep the poop soft.  This is what the infant GI doctor explained to us and it seems to be correct.  Also, do not give rice, bananas or other binding foods.
