Success after IF

Talk to me about babies and shoes.

We have a few pairs of Bobux soft sole shoes that I put on DS occasionally, when we're out and about - mostly because it's cold and I hate seeing his little feet in just socks!  (Or, sometimes, to make a cute outfit Embarrassed)  At daycare and at home he's in just socks (Old Navy, so they have just a bit of rubber on the bottom.)

I've read over and over that barefoot is best for their development, learning to walk, what have you. . .

Well, as of this past weekend - we have a walker!!!

He fusses to be put down when we're out and about, he's apparently on his feet all day at daycare. . . I like him being in just his socks, but it also seems it might be beneficial to give him a little more traction now.

At what point would you start putting shoes on him every morning as a matter of course?  And, what type of shoes?  Keep up with the soft soles (are they slip-resistant enough, or just for looks?)  Or, now that he's "walking", is it time to switch to a split-sole?  (Or wait until he's really walking, kwim?)

Re: Talk to me about babies and shoes.

  • We started putting shoes on daily when he started walkign regularly, and we do regular soled shoes (but try to get higher end brands that are made for walking/development, like See Kai Run, Pedoodles, etc.).

  • When henry is inside, he wears socks or goes barefoot (sometimes he has slippers on). If he is going to be walking outside, he wears shoes. I do not have him wear shoes in the house... I see no need for that.

As for what shoes to wear outside, I got him a good pair from stride rite.

  • Our situation was a little different since it was summer and warm, but we would only put soft bootie-type shoes on K until after she started walking. Her first real shoes were Robeez with a very flexible sole, and that was only because the weather started getting cooler and rainy and daycare said she was slipping in just the booties.

I've always heard not to do harder shoes until they are really established walkers. We had K in the Robeez until she wore them out and then we moved on to some Stride Rite shoes I got from babysteals.

  • I keep D with just socks on in the house. When I went to stride rite, they told me to keep him in soft soles until he was walking on his own. So I have a few pairs of soft soles, with rubber grips to prevent slipping he wears when we are out.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • I do the same...only put shoes on when we're out because it's cold.  At home and daycare it's just socks.  With my oldest when she started walking we still stayed with socks cause it is easier for them to get their balance without the soles.  However most of the walking is done on carpet...if our family room had wood floors I probably would have put her in the soft sole shoes just to avoid wipe outs

  • At 15 months we got DS his first pair of sneakers because we were going to disney world.  Before then, he was just wearing socks or soft soled shoes.  He should really be in soft soles until he is established in walking but if you need something with a firmer sole before then (like we did) then make sure it is something really flexible.  Olly shoes has great options for those first sneakers.

  • We were lucky -- Elizabeth learned to walk in May/June, so she was barefoot all the time!

We didn't start sending her to daycare in shoes until she moved into the toddler room in August. In the older infant room, they had crawlers and didn't want fingers being smashed by shoes. So we didn't start putting her in shoes daily until August, when she was 15 months and had already been walking 2-3 months.

Out and about in those early weeks of walking, she just wore Robeez and once she was more steady on her feet, we got a pair of Stride Rites.

    Congrats on your walker!!

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • My kids are only in socks or barefoot in the house. All three of my kids are in PT and the therapist all say they do not need shoes while in the house and it is better for them learn to walk without them. They did say clearly when you go out and they are walking you need something on there feet. They told always regular soled shoes that have some bend to them. My PT said the worst thing for them are completely soft soled shoes. Preston orthopedist said this as well!

  • Nicholas was the same age as your DS is now last January.   That is when I started putting him in shoes.   However he wasn't walking yet, but I wanted him to get used to wearing them.   I got him those SRT (I think that's what they are called- you can look it up on their website) shoes from Stride Rite.   His were these brown shoes with velcro.

Sending you a PM- be on the look out.
