Trying to Get Pregnant

Luteal phase--how short is too short?

My luteal phase has been pretty consistent at 11 days.  However, I'm not sure if this is too short or not.  TCOYF says the LP should be at least 12 days, but Dr. Google gives me sites that say 10 days is long enough.  Who's right?  And should I be concerned about my 11 day LPs?

Re: Luteal phase--how short is too short?

  • In my experience, it varies by doctor.  I had an 11-day LP, and I was a little bit surprised when my RE diagnosed me with LPD (luteal phase defect).  I was prescribed Clomid and progesterone to correct it, and that's all it took for me, which makes me think my RE was right.

  • My Dr. said they like to see 12+, but 11 will support a pregnancy most of the time. She asked me to take a B6 complex vitamin to help. I've been taking 50 mg of it for 9 months and my LPs have gone from 8 to 13 or 14 days now. Yay!

That's awesome that you have seen the B6 work.  I have been taking 100mg daily and haven't seen any change in LP.

How long have you been using it? I didn't notice a noticeable difference until I had been using it for 5 or 6 months. But now I've noticed a HUGE difference since I've been on it for so long.

  • Hmm, I can't really remember how long I have been using it.  I think I started with 50 mg/day before we were TTC--my LPs were really short when I was still breastfeeding my son, so I think I started on the 50 mg around August, when I stopped BF.  I upped it to 100 mg/day last cycle.  So probably close to 6 months now.

Technically my LP has increased, since it was 6-11 days while I was BFing, but I think that has much more to do with weaning than it does the B6.

  • My LP is always 11 days long, which I thought was fine. I had read that anything between 10 and 16 days is considered normal.

I had my first RE appointment last week though and he diagnosed me with LPD and put me on Prometrium this cycle. He says anything over 12 days is good. I hope that this is all it needs to get pregnant.

  • Thanks for posting this thread. It seems like a pretty common issue, and (from my super non-scientific read) one that affects women more who have been on BC.

My question: When do you talk to a doctor about this?

I've really only been TTC for 4 months. I had 5 cycles since stopping BC in late September, and ovulated 3 times. My LP for those cycles has only been 7 or 8 days. Last month, I started drinking green tea (pre-o) and popping an extra B6 vitamin with my PNVs. Seems a bit early to bring in the big dogs, maybe.

Your LP will never really change too much, it's pretty consistent, unlike your O date. Because of that, I think you can talk to your Dr. as soon as you notice  a problem. I charted for 3 cycles and saw my LP was only 8 days long. So I talked to my Dr. after that 3rd cycle. I just called her and talked to her, it's not really something you need an exam for or anything. Your Dr. may want to see your charts to confirm, so you can bring those with you if you go in.

  • Thanks, Rebecki. And GL mrssoprano! I think I'll give my doc a call today.

  • FYI...I started taking 50 mgs of a vitamin B complex last cycle and it already right away lengthened my LP by 1 day (from 10 days to 11). I'm hoping if I keep taking it that subsequent cycles will be even longer. Pretty cool to see it working right away.

Although, it is a tease when your period is late and FF tells you that this is your longest LP ever and you might be pregnant.
