f/u to gallbladder

I went to my GI and he recommended this scan that tests gallbladder function.  If the test comes out fine, it's easier and makes more sense to "wait and see". But if the numbers are bad, it tells you that the gb is damaged and needs to come out.

Now to schedule that test...

  • I just read your other post.  I can't imagine what the pain must feel like.  Sad  Best wishes for the test!  I hope you get some definitive answers so you can move forward with some sort of treatment.

Thanks.  It doesn't hurt all the time, just when there's an attack (thank goodness, or I think I may have had to shoot myself!)... but it's just the fear of another attack and then possibly having to have emergency surgery that's scary!

  • Cannot wait to hear how it goes...and what's involved. I may need to schedule my own scan...oy.

I was thinking about you when they asked if I was still breastfeeding - it's called a HIDA scan (so you can look it up), but they inject you with a radioactive dye and follow it around your body, so from what I understand, you can't BF for several days after the scan.

  • GL, i hope you don't need surgery!
  • Wishing you the best and good luck on the test!

  • I don't post here much, but your post caught my attention because I just got the HIDA scan done earlier this week to test my gallbladder.  It is a nuclear medicine test, so they had me fill-out a questionnaire asking if I was pregnant or breast feeding.  As you already mentioned, they inject a radioactive dye in you, so you can't breastfeed for a number of days following (I'm not sure since I'm not pregnant or breast feeding).  Then you lie there for about an hour while a camera takes pictures of your abdomen.  Then you drink this shake (kinda like Ensure) and then lie there for another 45 minutes while it takes more pictures.

The test itself is really painless, and I found it kind of relaxing to lie there with nothing to do.  I haven't gotten the results back yet, so not sure what will happen with my GB.  I do wish you the very best with your gall bladder situation, though.  I just read the previous post, and it sounds painful!  Luckily I just have some sludge, so I haven't experienced the pain you guys were talking about *knocks on wood*...

Thanks!  I really appreciate you posting about your experience.  I was wondering what it was going to be like.

Good luck with your results, too.  I hope you don't have to experience that pain!
