Success after IF

Birth control before TTC #2?

Hi ladies, I have my 6 week pp appt in 3 weeks and I need to make a decision about what birth control option to use. We would love to TTC again for #2 in a year or so, so ideally I should use bc for the year. However, after dealing with IF and having lost my periods on bcp and then having them never come back, both dh and I are scared to have me go back on it. I have PCOS plus a mix of HA. Of course the hope is that pregnancy may help my hormone levels out, but it's impossible to know. I feel like I'd rather have #2 sooner rather than later, but at the same time we'd ideally like to space it out (though IF makes me think that I don't have the luxury of trying to plan well). So what did you ladies do given IF for birth control if you knew you wanted more? Thanks so much!

Re: Birth control before TTC #2?

  • Well, after my 6 wk pp appt, I was nervous about having another, so I went to Target and bought these spermacide strips that are supposed to be placed vaginally. The funny thing is that they are still in the box (that has never been opened). I don't think we even had sex until  9 weeks pp and at that point my DH and I decided that we'd take our chances. Almost a year and a half later, still no BFP/suprise baby. So, I guess it all depends on what you can handle. If you happen to get PG the first time you have pp sex, is that ok? If so, skip the BC. If not, I'd pick something up.

  • We used condoms because like you, I didnt want to go back on birth control before trying again.

  • similar story to monkeygirl...bought condoms because I refuse to risk messing things up with hormones just in case my body was "reset" by having a baby...but they are still in the box.
  • We wanted at least 3 years between babies, but also knew that our chances of conceiving on our own (100% anovulatory plus severe MFI) were very low. We didn't use protection after my son was born, figuring that yes, we'd like them farther apart, but if it happens, we save ourselves the worry, uncertainty, and financial/emotional expense of IVF. I got a surprise BFP when my son was almost 17 months old (on about day 70 of my second or third unmedicated cycle EVER). So, apparently pregnancy did help me. We are a bit freaked out about taking care of both since it's not in keeping with our initial plan, but even more so we're happy to be expecting again regardless of the timing. Best of luck whatever you decide!

  • After what we went thru and ALL the crap I shot myself up with to TTC I swore that I would NEVER add hormones to my body again.

(come see how I'm holding to that when menopause hits and I'll sell my soul to get out of hot flash hell).

    No hormonal BCP for us.

We were told it was highly unlikely we'd ever conceive again even WITH IVF so we decided that while spaced close together wouldn't have been our first choice.....

having another child and having a FREE one seemed better than the alternative.

There are lots of non-hormonal options out there:

    sponges, condoms, VCF's + charting.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I also have PCOS and I am on the pill.  My RE suggested it, and said it will put my body in prime position should we want to try for another down the road.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • We decided to take our chances after having DS.  While BFing, I didn't get my cycle back, but as soon as I weaned, I got pg again.  Not quite what we would have planned, but we were so happy to have a surprise that we went with it.  This time, however, we are going with condoms and charting.  We may want to try for a #3, and after the IF the first time, I didn't want to mess with the hormonal forms of BC again.
