Local News

The news that I watch in the morning did a mini story, and are taking comments, about the debate on if pregnant women should have special designated parking spots.

Thought it would be a good topic for our board.

Re: Local News

  • I think that it is very considerate if an employer provides"stork" parking for the 3rd trimester (mine does). But should it be a law? I'm not sure. Is an 8-9 month pregnant woman that unlike someone with a physical handicap that would qualify for a handicap parking sticker? Maybe in some cases so, and in some cases not. But how many spaces would you require for compliance? How would you enforce that only women in their 3rd tri use it? I think it seems more doable to issue temporary handicap parking to women who are having trouble getting around in their third trimester, instead of requiring all business to make new spaces that will not be enforced and therefore misused.

  • Yes, I think it is a good idea to have the parking spots for women that need them. Yes, it is good for us to walk and get the excersize but I still think the option is good to have. And no I wouldn't park there being 4 weeks pregnant lol

  • The way I see it, 9 weeks PG, no leave the spot alone, 9 months PG, I'm in the spot! Lol!

Also, I feel that if obese people can plop down in those motor carts in stores, then by god, a woman growing a baby should be able to park a few spaces closer.

  • There are some places around here that have spots for pg and new moms (also nice when you're alone with a newborn), and I think they're great.  But I don't think it should be required to have them.  I don't think *most* people would respect them and use them anyway.  But I agree that someone should be able to get a temporary handicap tag if they need one.

  • This is a very interesting topic.  I saw a similar story on the morning news.

I agree with the pp's, if there is a real medical reason that someone needs to park closer, your doctor should be able to provide you with a temporary permit.  The "Expectant Mother" spots are nice, but I don't think they're necessary.

  • I was always grateful for them when I was in my 3rd tri and had a toddler in tow. Later I appreciated it more when the sign said for new moms too, because having a NB and toddler in tow was difficult.  However, it was not necessary and I could manage without and often did.

  • A pregnant woman? No.
A pregnant woman with health issues can get a handicap pass.

A woman carting around 3+ kids under 5? Yes ;)

  • they aren't common here.  I don't think they are necessary.  Nice, yes, but not needed.  I managed to do just fine at the end of my pregnancy walking around in the snow and ice.

  • There are a few around that I know of. There is one at the malll by my work, cvs usually has them and babiesrus does too.I think they are really nice! Last time I was PG I used them a couple times in my first trimester-I was so dead tired I needed it more then , than in later months..and I didn't care what anyone thought...

  • They have them almost everywhere on Army posts. I've never seen anyone park in one even though there are a lot of PG ladies on post!

Like PP said, if you really need it you can get a temp handicap permit. Otherwise - let's not be lazy :) But I'm one to park far away and walk just b/c I think it's easier than trying to find a spot.
