How to get out of a bad sleep cycle?

DD (almost 3) is currently in the worst sleep cycle.  She gets up way too early, takes a 2 hr nap and then goes to bed late.

We usually have a huge argument at bedtime, she refuses to go down, comes out of her bed 100 times and ends up a screamy mess until one of us lays down with her.  My mom suggested upping her nap time so that she sleeps earlier in the day and then is more tired at bed time.  So, she's now napping from 1 - 3 (instead of 2-4) and going to bed around 8 instead of 9.  The unfortunate part is that she is now waking up between 4:45 and 5:30 every day.  I think she is chronically overtired and I have no idea how to get her out of this cycle.

Any ideas?

  • Any while you're at it, want to tackle the 8 month old who doesn't always sleep through the night?  He was up at midnight screaming like someone was trying to chop his fingers off.  Gave him some tylonol thinking it was teething but he wouldn't go back into his bed.  Everytime I set him down he just woke up and screamed again.  He just wanted to comfort suck but the kid won't take a paci :(

  • Ethan is the same way some nights.  I think he is hungry-he ate 5 oz at 11, 6 oz at 2 am and nursed at 5 am also.  He just finished 7 oz b/w 7:15-8:15 am also.

I am going to try and feed him every 2 hours today to see if by making sure he gets all his food in during the day he will sleep better at night.

    I feel your pain.

  • I feel your pain! We've been all messed up because of Christmas break and snow days and are dying to get Bennett back on a regular schedule. He refuses to nap at home (which is so weird because he'll nap at school in a room full of friends?!?) and he doesn't go to sleep until 9ish.

That leaves absolutely no time for DH and I to do anything. We have Showtime and have been trying to watch this season of Dexter onDemand and have yet to watch a single episode. We've had the subscription for months.

  • Ugh!  I feel you.  Jacob does go to bed early (like 7:15-7:30), but he's up for the day usually between 5:30-5:45.  His naps have been getting shorter too.  I used to be able to count on at least 2 hours, but lately its been 90 minutes.  So, he's waking earlier and not napping as long.

The advice is totally conflicting too - put him to bed earlier (I mean, how much earlier than 7:15 can we go?) .  Put him to bed later.  Ugh!

Either way it makes for one tired mama!

I have no advice, just sympathy.

Both of mine have done this the past two nights. Nothing worked and it lasted for 2 hours!
