Fever ?

Brenna has had a fever once in her life...until today.  I got called to pick her up today from daycare...she had a fever of 101 (armpit).  I took it when I got her home (rectally) and it was 101.6.  I have a call into the Dr. but at what temp is considered "high".  I think 101.6 is considered moderate.   I gave her tylenol and she seemed to cool off quickly though I haven't taken her temp again yet.

Have I mentioned how much I HATE taking her temp?!

She does have a bit of a cold, and is a little bit fussy/more tired than usual...but is otherwise herself. Eating fine...and 5 mins ago she was falling asleep in my arms and now she is sitting in her crib bouncing up and down and talking to herself.  LOL

Re: Fever ?

  • FROM BABYCENTER...

Keep in mind that everyone's temperature rises in the late afternoon and early evening and falls between midnight and early morning. The natural cycle of our internal thermostat explains why doctors get most of their phone calls about fever in the late afternoon and early evening.

Ask your baby's doctor when she'd like you to call if your baby has a fever. Common guidelines are:

If your baby is less than 3 months old and has a temperature of 100.4 degrees F (38 degrees C) or higher, call the doctor immediately. A baby this young needs to be checked for serious infection or disease.

For a baby between 3 and 6 months old, call if his temperature reaches 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C) or higher.

If your baby is 6 months or older, call if his fever reaches 103 degrees F (39.4 degrees C) or higher.

When you call, the doctor will probably ask you about other symptoms. The most important thing is how your baby looks and acts ? if he has lost his appetite, has little energy, is noticeably pale or flushed, or is extremely irritable and can't be consoled, or if you notice other changes in his behavior and appearance.

Liz - 103 is what I have heard from other parents as well. Keep an eye on her though. Like it says, fevers like to spike in late afternoon or early evening. Things can change very quickly.

Hope she is back to her normal self soon!

  • Hope she feels better soon.  We bought one of these temporal thermometers and just love it.  It so easy to use if they are sleeping.

  • After all of the New Year's ickies you guys have been having, you don't need this!  Since we have been the fever family the past few months, we have been working off anything that is below 102 and she's acting OK, eating, drinking, peeing, playing, sleeping and not stuffed up beyond belief, we treat with ibuprofen.  We do not alternate meds, but I do have the "real" dose she can take based on her weight.  Any fever and activity change is a call, and anything over 102 is a call.  Hope she's feeling better asap!
