clicky poll: flat screen TVs

If you were to decide to buy a flat screen TV this week, how much would *you* expect to pay for a TV that would now be your family's main (or only) TV?

Re: clicky poll: flat screen TVs

  • I didn't respond yet because it would depend on the size of the TV. What size are you looking at?

  • It would depend on the size of the living room.

My husband thinks the bigger the better when it comes to our "main" TV.  We have a 72" in the living room (our living room is very big with very tall ceilings).  I find it obnoxious but it wasn't worth the fight.  Cars and TVs are just his thing I guess.

  • It very much depends on the size of the TV that you would like to buy.

For my purposes in asking it's totally hypothetical -- whatever size and with whatever features you and your DH agreed on! Wink

  • for our living room, a 42inch is perfect.  we paid about $800 2yrs ago.  the same tv was on sale before Christmas for $650 and it's a Samsung.   you can get really great deals now.

  • OK, I responded $1400-$1999. Ours is a 60 inch flat screen that is our main tv in the living room. Going smaller will be cheaper (I think we could get a 32 inch for less than $1,000).

  • We just bought a 26" Samsung for $269 - can't remember the original price but 1) it was on sale, and 2) it was discounted even further b/c it was a return.  It works great for us.  I'm not into big TVs at all, plus we have a tiny LR.

  • I think it really depends on the size of the room.  We just built a new house with a much larger living room than we previously had.  We now have a 55" mounted above our fireplace.  I find it slightly obnoxious but it was a fight I didn't want to have with DH.  He let me have crown molding throughout the downstairs and he got the big TV.  Life is all about compromise!

Or, for $269, you could have bought a bottle of $269 wine. ;)  I think the TV would last a bit longer....

  • all depends on size of room and size of TV.

our livingroom is not huge at all - we have a 46" that we got a year ago during all the pre-Superbowl sales for about $850.

  • What are you guys looking at?  I answered $700-$999 because that seems to be the range for the TVs we've considered.  Our family room is not huge; I think 36-42" would be nice.  We have an ancient, tiny TV and keep talking about getting a nice flat screen... But DH just got a new chair for the family room (a nice big recliner that doesn't LOOK like a recliner ;) so the TV's on hold for us.
  • I know I am responding late, but we bought our tv last christmass off Amazon..And after MUCH, MUCH, research we found the best deal with them.  We got a 60" Panasonic Viera..WE love it...we watch a LOT of tv and Sporting events in this house so this was the BEST tv for that.  Our second choice would have been a Vizio, which is what I think we are going to get for our upstairs bedroom...

Amazon is really great though!  They also have free delivery and if you apply for there credit card then you can get an even better deal..

  • Thank you so much, everyone!  Sorry for the intentionally vague question, but you've completely answered it. ;)  The background here is that DH and I are very happy with our opposite-of-flat-screen TV.  It fits perfectly in our armoire and is plenty big for our needs, 27"-28".  I bought it in 2000.

But for Christmas my ILs announced that they were buying us a flat screen TV.  We truly don't need it, not in this house.  Totally no benefit over what we have now; in fact it wouldn't work as well in the space we have since it would look funny in our armoire.  If we wait until we move the technology and cost will be better anyway.

My ILs are crazy -- they want everything but only buy the cheapest stuff.  I'd rather have fewer things (less clutter) and yet invest enough $$$ such that it'll last.  They have so much crap for 2 people...decades' worth!

So I looked and saw that anything I would hypothetically consider would be $900-$1200.  DH sad they had "probably" planned to spend $400.  A flat screen for that would just be a flatter version of what we have, LOL.  Why spend anything at all then, since what we have fits so well there?  It would be $ down the drain for no reason.

So, you've all assured me that a reasonable, average couple would in fact be likely looking in the $1000ish range, as about 50% said less and 50% said more.

I'm grateful they want to get us something but there is nothing we need less, LOL.  I mean they heard me ask to keep the TV off when they were here in December, and they know what we have looks like it was made to fit right there.  I'm all for bigger fancier TVs, but not in this house, and not with two very young children.  They know we still have 23 months until Elena will be allowed to watch.  Again, I'm grateful they thought of us, but for now, I'd rather have a new espresso maker...cheaper too. :)

If we were to move, then we'd be talking. ;)

  • The size of the room is so relevant. In our old house, the 42" we had in the library was perfect for that room. It is now in our bedroom and is perfect there, too.

We had a 47" in our media room basement. It will go in our new living room and it will be a bit small.

I said 1500 to 1999, i think, because if we were to replace it (which we will NOT! lol) I would go closer to 55"

Makes sense to me! ;)  Thanks!
