teachers...breaking contract?

I am getting so anxious as my maternity leave is about to be up! I love my job but I am not sure I want to go back. Plus, we are moving this summer and I will be turning my notice in at the end of the year. But I was just curious if any of you have broken contract? I live in Texas, so I would love to hear if you are or in this area and have done this or known someone that has.

Re: teachers...breaking contract?

  • I've never lived in Texas but contracts are normally written for s school district, not state. Usually nothing happens for breaking a contract. Some districts ask you to forfeit $250 or $500 if don't provide a month's notice or so. Read your contract or call your union. Don't worry about it and just give a minimum of 2 weeks notice before you are due to return so you can say that you did for future employment.

  • I was just required to pay back what they had contributed to my benefits during my mat leave (about 600 bucks) on top of what I would've contributed from my paychecks (another 500-600). This was to not return from mat leave. If I would've returned for 4 weeks, I wouldn't be responsible for the first 600. I work at a private school and teachers there are not on contract unless we are getting tuition assistance.
  • not in the area, but in md, you potentially lose your certificate.

  • I broke a contract once due to moving out-of-state and because I couldn't give them the 30 days or whatever they required, they told me I could never be re-hired in the district (which didn't much matter to me because on the off chance I ever moved back there, I wouldn't work for that school system again). I would check your contract or ask your union rep if you have one and see what it says.

  • In our district they have the right to hold your teaching certificate until your contract date would have expired.  Also, you are "blacklisted" from the district (never to be rehired by them again.)  I soooo want to never to go back to work.  I love teaching, but I want to stay home!  I make the larger paycheck though, so I'm stuck.  I'm jealous!  I'd look into the repercussions if I were you, but it sounds like a great deal if you were leaving anyhow!  Your association representative can probably help you find the contract rules.

  • in some districts/states, you can lose your license.  My school would make you pay back your paid leave and benefits.  Not worth it to me.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

This is a dumb, dumb, dumb idea.  There are only four months left in the school year.  Are four months really worth being blacklisted by your district and getting the side-eye from all future districts because you broke a contract in the middle of the year before?

Agreed. I know in my district they refused to let teachers out of contracts.

Wow I'm really surprised that you can lose your license in some states! Harsh! There were always options for a new mom in the district that I worked for so that a contract didn't even has to be broken. Can't you request personal leave? Personal leave in those districts would've been unpaid with no benefits for a year or two.
