Do you love what you do?

I've just been feeling so blah about work lately. As corny as it sounds, I keep wondering what I'm meant to do in life (other than being a mom of course). You know the saying, "love what you do and you'll never work"? I'm just not there. Most of the time I like my job, but that's all it is - a job. It's not too fulfilling. Anyone else feel this way?

Re: Do you love what you do?

  • Yes! I teach, and we had snow days thursday and friday, and having more time off with DD makes me want to cry when I go back. I'm so thankful to have a job that allows me more time with her, but the job itself doesn't make me want to skip to work. I know most people don't have jobs that do, but I still waver back and forth between teaching and wishing I could be a SAHM. Although, I honestly can't picture myself doing any other line of work. Especially without me going back and getting a different degree. Which I'm too lazy and cheap to do at this point.

I think I just get bogged down in the negatives of the job--disrespectful, rude kids, unattainable expectations from higher ups, the "i'm never caught up" feeling, etc etc.

  • i fully accept that I have just a boring old job. I am working right now, and just told DH, I hate working. lol. I loved being a SAHM, but we can't afford to do that anymore. I just hope DH gets a better job soon and then I can be back to doing my favorite job day in and day out!

I don't think that I know exactly what my niche is either. I would like to do real estate, but I want to wait until my kids are in school to go back myself. But even then I'm not sure I would love it so much it wouldn't seem like work.

  • Yes, I love what I do.  I waited until 39 to have a little one and went back when he was 4 months full time.

I worked all the way to partner at a larger law firm then I left and went in house at a fortune 20 company.

I love being in house... i have all of the legal challenge of a firm, no billable hours, and a staff that I love.

I would go back to school or whatever it took to find what I loved to do as work is such an important part of most people's lives (since many professionals are there 10+ hours a day).

My son is #1, but I also love my career.

  • I do fundraising for non-profits. I, honestly, kind of hate it. It's really hard, doesn't pay well, the hours are abismal... but I've been doing it for 6 years. I'm like, addicted to this crappy job.

  • Yes, I'm a Dog Groomer. I have always loved animals. My schedule can be flexible when needed and if I ahve to I can bring LO's to work with me.  I kept both my DD's with me at work till the were 4 months old.But before that I worked a a Grocery store in the Sefood Dept.  I hated everything about that job then one day I took a giant leap, dropped to part time, went to grooming school to learn the basics, finally quit and 12 yrs later I'm still doing what I love.  I am not someone that could be a SAHM, I love my LO's but I also need my time away from them.

  • I used to like my job a whole lot more before I had DS.  Now though there are days where I can't stand it and then there are days where I don't mind it.  I just don't love it.  I'm a respiratory therapist.  I work two 12 hour night shifts a week and then one 4 hour evening shift (7-11pm.)  So I don't have to be away from my LO too much.

  • I'm a CPA and my job is great for the fact that if I don't have to be at a client, my schedule is very flexible. However, during our busy season (which is coming up soon) the hours are insane. I think I'm just dreading having to be away from the girls so much.
