? for those that cook from scratch

How important is it to you to use Organic flour? It seems to cost a LOT more than regular flour and I am having a hard time justifying it. I mostly try to get organic verisions of everything we eat; as long as the price is close.

Re: ? for those that cook from scratch

  • I typically don't buy organic flour (unless it's a specialty type flour, like Bob's Red Mill stuff...), but I guess it's a good way to ensure you're not getting any crazy Monsanto stuff.

  • I typically won't spend the money on organic flour, but I only use unbleached flour and try to get the "all natural" stuff if I can find it.  One option too might be looking in the bulk section of certain grocery stores like Whole Foods, Wegmans, or even certain farmers markets.  They will typically sell flour (sometimes organic) and it's FAR cheaper than buying it prepackaged.

Ditto.  We do the dirty dozen for organic because we honestly cannot afford to do a ton more than that on a regular basis.  We just buy unbleached flour and use wheat when we can.

  • lady g--i forget where you are living now but we get organic flour in bulk at the berkeley bowl (off ashby in berkeley) for 99 cents a pound. i usually buy around 6-10 pounds, but you can buy as little or as much as you want. whole foods charges $1.29 if i remember correctly.
  • I don't buy organic flour mainly because of the cost.  It might be more cost effective to buy it in bulk though if you that option (we unfortunately don't).

  • I buy it sometimes, and other times I don't. I recently caught it on sale at the natural foods co-op so bought multiple bags (this was before the holidays, so I knew I would use a bunch in the next couple months)...other times I just buy unbleached when it's cost prohibitive to get the natural/organic.

  • I buy organic flour in the bulk section of Sunflower Farmers Market or Whole Foods (wherever I happen to be shopping).  I also buy my organic oatmeal, sugar, carob and chocolate chips, dried fruits, and coffee in the bulk section.  I bake a ton and make lots of homemade granola so buying in bulk is usually easier anyway.  I always keep an eye on sales flyers too!  Sunflower will put different bulk items on sale each week, so sometimes it is really cheap to pick up the basics.
  • I don't.  I am 100% on unbleached flour now though!  We found it at Sams club.  20#s was really cheap..I don't remember how much but it was about the price of 10# unbleached here!

You live around here too? Wow. Small world! I'm always surprised to find that Bumpies live so close to me! I'm on the Oak / Berk border.

  • I cook from scratch (down to making my own cream of chicken, all my own broths, sauces, etc), but I don't use that much flour...so the price difference doesn't make us or break us, you know?
  • I only buy it if it is on sale.
