So as I was leaving my appt on friday my midwife said, next time ill need a hour for your glouse test.. alright cool, I go to check out and the front desk lady was like ok ill see you at 4:30, and I was like dont you guys close at 5, I need a hour appt, and she hands me a bottle of "the stuff" im suppose to drink, and says drink this at 4, come to your appt at 4:30, and ill take blood at 5.. sounds great, i dont have to hang out in the office for a hour doing nothing... Until i read the bottle and it says you have to fast for 12hours.... uh theres no way I can fast until 4:00pm, let alone 5 when id be leaving.. she didnt even mention this, so my question is do you really have to fast, and i wasn't told, or no? I plan on calling but I was just seeing if anyone knew.
Re: Glucose test question
Maybe she gave you the wrong stuff. I think the drink might be slightly different for the 1 hour and 3 hour. I had to do both last time, and they were slightly different in taste.
I had to fast for 12 hours before the 3 hour test, but not before the 1 hour. I would call and get things straightened out before you have to go in. I don't think anyone recommends fasting before the 1 hour test.
There were at least two other posts about the glucose test today. This one might be helpful:

I'm pretty certain that there are different tests for different offices. I've seen varying answers on here. Some ladies ahve to fast, some can eat a light breakfast, some can eat like normal.
I'd call and tell them that they need to do the test in the am because there's no way you can go all day without eating. Also, I'm surprised they're trusting enough to let you take the drink on your own.
well I guess it's a testament to where you live. I lived in a combination area with people on welfare and medicaid, while others were self-sufficient homeowners with their own medical insurance. Anyway, when I lived there they HAD to do the drink there and she made a big ordeal because I drank a tiny bit of water because I was parched. The nurse said they have to re-do a lot of tests because of people not following directions.

I have mine next week and my doc specifically told me NOT to fast - her exact words were "you should be able to eat a whole pizza right before you come in and pass the test if everything is fine, the point is to challenge tolerance"
She also told me that this is not the fasting test - if I fail that would be the 3 hours - so I'll go in, they'll give me the stuff, an hour later I'll go to the lab (my practice is in the hospital) and take the test and she'll review. She said if the lab asks me if I ate and I say yes and they try and tell me I can't do the test to have them call her because they confuse the 1 hour with the 3 hour.
This is the same for me.
