I need your thoughts ladies.....worried sick.

Hi all. I went in for my first u/s today at 8 weeks 4 days. A sac came up, and what looks like something in the sac, but I can't really tell. My Dr. said it only looks like I'm 5 weeks along, which is absolutely not correct since I was charting. I burst into tears and while grasping at straws I showed him my chart. To which he really had no idea what he was looking at......not a big deal I guess since every medical profesional I have showed my chart to has given me the side eye. Anyways, he ordered betas drawn today, and I go back wednesday for more, and he wants to see me in a week.

I guess I was just hoping to see a very clear blob, but I'm realizing that the clear ones are done vaginally, and mine was abdominal.

What I don't understand, is IF the baby stopped growing at 5 weeks (which is how far along he thinks I am) and I'm 8.5 weeks now, wouldn't I have miscarried or had some spotting/cramping by now? Also, at 5 weeks is when my morning sickness and sore boobs kicked in....so would I have gotten those things if the baby stopped growing then?

Two friends of mine who had the same Dr. said that his machine's aren't the best, and they didn't get clear pictures this early either. It looks like a backwards C to me.....not sure what that white line is.

Anyone else have an experience like this with an abdominal u/s?

Re: I need your thoughts ladies.....worried sick.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I know you're looking for reassurance, but only your betas are going to tell you what's happening, along with monitoring through u/s.

In answer to your question about cramping and spotting, there is a such thing as a missed miscarriage in which the baby stops growing but you don't miscarry naturally. I still had symptoms with my first loss because my body still thought it was pregnant.

Can you link your chart? Maybe you O'ed later than you thought?

  • You might have had a missed miscarridge, your body had not "relized" that the baby stopped growing. So they might prescribe you meds to kick start bleeding or you would need a D&C.

I really hope this is not the case and that the bloodwork comes back with some answers.

  • I'm so sorry your dealing with this stress. At 8 weeks+ an external U/S is usually very clear. This U/S looks a lot earlier than 8 weeks. Are you sure you couldn't be earlier than you expected?

  • i'm sorry you are going through this.  i have to agree that you can't be 5 weeks because it looks like you got your bfp 5 weeks ago.  hopefully they just had a hard time with the u/s machine and all will be ok.

  • Thanks for your thoughts ladies. The link to my chart is in my sig. There is no way I conceieved later.....we haven't had sex since I ovulated because I am a worrier. I wish it was possible though :(
  • I'm so sorry this is causing you stress Britt. Hopefully the betas will give you a better answer tomorrow. Like you said, other patients have had issues with your Drs machine. Ts and Ps coming your way!

  • I hope the best for you. Hopefully your two friends are right and it's just his u/s. You really will only know once the betas come back like pp said. You're in my thoughts.

  • I am so sorry you have to go through this.  Hopefully it is just the docs u/s machine.  T & P's
  • Dear Britt - Do no worry yet please.  I know it is hard not to but go get a second opinion.  Less than 1% of pregnancies end via missed miscarriage.  There are a lot of people on support groups because they are part of that 1% and need support.  Just remember though it seems like a lot of people may tell you that they had it, the number is small.

    Praying for you

  • I am so sorry.  I went through this same thing in June.  I went in and had a weird u/s where they thought that I was 5 weeks when I was almost 8 weeks.  I wasn't charting so I wasn't sure when I ovulated.  We checked my beta's and they doubled the way that they should and scheduled an u/s a week later.  I went in and we never found a fetal pole or heartbeat.  I am so sorry for what you are going through and I pray that this isn't what is happening to you.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.  Hopefully the betas will be where they need to be and its just a faulty ultrasound. I will be praying for you.

  • I am so, so sorry you are going through this.  I really hope that the ultrasound machine was faulty and that your betas look good.

I went through the same thing last September.  I had my first u/s at 9w4d and baby measured 6w3d with no heartbeat.  I had three subsequent ultrasounds at the hospital with much better equipment, with the same result.  I really hope this isn't the case for you.  Good luck and keep us posted!

  • Okay, so I'm a little conflicted on how to answer this.  On one hand, I've had an ultrasound that didn't leave me with the whole truth, but on the other, I've also experienced a missed m/c.

With my current pregnancy, I had some bleeding one night and went to the ER around 7.5 weeks.  They did an abdominal u/s because that was the only machine they had available after hours (this was a "small town" hospital).  The doc said he saw a sac and something that could be a fetus, though he was not able to find a heartbeat.  I freaked the 'f' out and made a follow up the next day with my OB.  A vaginal u/s was done the fetus was identified instantly..as was a heartbeat.

I've also been on the loosing end of the stick.  My last pregnancy, I had no bleeding and no cramping.  I had an u/s at 8w 3d and saw a perfectly developing baby.  Three weeks later I started bleeding.  A u/s done at that time revealed that the baby had stopped growing only three days after my u/s.

I guess the moral of my post is that it is hard to say what is happening with you, and until you get your betas back or have an internal u/s, you won't likely have any answers.  That's the really sucky thing about a missed m/c.  You just don't know that it's happened and it could take weeks for your body to recognize it.  I hope with my heart of hearts that the m/c is not the case and that your betas paint a better picture then today's u/s.

  • I'm a person who likes honesty, so I'm going to give it to you honestly. If you are sure of your dates, then this will not be a happy ending. First trimester ultrasounds are the most accurate for dating purposes. If you are measuring three weeks behind, then I would presume that you are having a missed miscarriage. You can still have every pregnancy symptom. I've had two missed miscarriages, and I also had every pregnancy symptom. To the person that said missed miscarriages are rare, they aren't that rare. The statistics are wrong. To the OP, I'm sorry. I have had four miscarriages. I know how devastating it is, and I hope that you can find peace soon.

  • Why did they do an abdominal ultrasound rather than a transvaginal ultrasound?  With both of my daughters, my docs used transvaginal until I was about 10 weeks because they said that an adominal early in a pregnancy is too difficult to distingush what is really going on.

    Absolutely THIS!

My OB said it isn't even worth it to do an abdominal before 12 weeks because it would be next to impossible to date the pregnancy, distinguish anything... It is very possible that the u/s is just not picking up everything.

There is ALWAYS hope. Good luck to you.

  • Oh hon, I am so sorry you have to go through this.  It's so horrible not knowing.

I had something similar happen with my last loss---my 1st u/s showed my baby measuring almost 3 weeks behind which was impossible b/c it would have made me getting my BFP before I even O'd.  We had a follow up u/s a week later and there was no longer a hb and the baby was gone.

Missed m/c are actually fairly common--I'm not sure where PP got the 1% number.  I really, really hope this is not the case for you and that you will go in soon and see your little baby  :)  GL hon and keep us posted!

With everything I have, I'm holding onto this glimmer of hope. I was told he doesn't do transvaginal ultrasounds, which I'm finding out now is ridiculous. I'm thinking about going up to the hospital to get one done just so I have piece of mind.

Thank you ladies for your thoughts. I really appreciate the support you all have given me.

I am so sorry you're going through this. I think it's ridiculous that they didn't do a vaginal ultrasound on you immediately following the abdominal u/s. I would ask to go somewhere else for a vaginal ultrasound, or like you said, you can go to the hospital through the er. They should do a vaginal u/s on you through the er. I hope you get some answers soon.

  • I would go somewhere else and get a second opinion and have them do a vaginal ultrasound.

When we first found out I was pregnant my doc thought I was 8weeks according to my LMP we then had an ultrasound done, first an abdominal, it was really hard to see anything so she had me empty my bladder so she could do a vaginal one.  With the vaginal all we could see was the gestational sac and the yolk sac nothing else..I was so worried something was wrong...then she told me I'm not as far along as we thought and I was only measuring 5w3d.  she then set up another u/s appt.( which was yesterday) and I measured 7w1d and we could see the baby and the heartbeat( also another vaginal u/s)!

So try and stay positive until you know for sure.....you could have missed calculated even though you think you're sure...God works in mysterious ways!

When I was pregnanct with DD I couldn't get a clear veiw or heart beat with adominal u/s or doppler until I was 14 weeks. I hope that give you some peace of mind. GL
