Hey ladies,
My beta is finally coming down. I was really worried that I would have to get the methotrexate shot and not be able to cycle for 3 months.
Also, my RE told me today that I tested positive for MTHFR and I have 1 copy of the gene mutation (C677T). My RE did mention that he would give me an Rx for prescription strength folic acid that has Vit. B, but didn't today. I also read that with MTHFR you need a certain type of folic acid since your body doesn't absorb or metabolize folic acid. Anyone else have MTHFR? If yes, what did your RE do for treatment?
I am also concerned about our frosties, since I wasn't on any additional folic acid during my IVF cycle. I asked my RE if he felt having sufficient folic acid during conception and after implantation is crucial to embryo development and he said yes. I have read that some babies can be born with spina bifida, down syndrome and neural tube defect with this deficiency.
My RE isn't convinced this is causing my m/c and didn't mention any tx, but did test today to check my homocysteine levels. I also read that if your homocysteine levels are increased, you have a higher risk of blood clots. In light of this, I called and made an appointment with my OB to get his opinion on what would be the best tx once pregnancy is hopefully acheived again. TIA:)
Re: MTHFR and beta update (saif/paif welcome)
I'm sorry you are having to go through all of this, but glad you are getting some answers.
Good luck!
I'm sorry, S&S. I don't have MTHFR, but at least two of our recent grads do (Mari and mdluv). It is my understanding that having one copy is typically the better version (some people have on copy, some have two that are different - heterozygous or two that are the same - homozygous with homozygous typically being considered the worst case). That being said, many REs and OBs don't believe it is the cause of miscarriages. Some treat with just folic acid and B vitamin supplementation and some put you on baby aspirin or blood thinners (Lovenox or heparin).
My BFF in real life has heterozygous MTHFR. She had two m/c before being tested and one after (the third was triploidy, so not MTHFR/blood clot related). She was put on high doses of prescription folic acid and B vitamins as well as baby aspirin (which she was told to take daily for life). After this protocol, she had a healthy baby girl and is now expecitng #2. I think the reason she was not put on a blood thinner (other than baby aspirin) was because her homocysteine levels remained in the normal range.
I would definitely ask your OB his thoughts about your frosties and your RE's approach. You want to be comfortable with what you decide to do from here.
~SAIF/PAIF/Everyone Welcome~

Thanks Mrs. Loos:)
Stl...thanks again for the reproductive thrombophilia sheet...this is the sheet I brought last week to my appt. and the RE agreed to test for Factor V Leiden, Protein C Activity and MTHFR. He felt these 3 test are somewhat relevant to possible m/c or infertility. It gives me hope that your friend finally got the right combo of additional supplements to sustain a pregnancy. I do still feel there is some link with MTHFR & m/c. Thanks for the support!
