Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone else not able to eat meat b/c of M/S?

I haven't been able to eat any for over a week because of such a strong aversion to it (even anything with meat-flavored seasoning).

I'm pretty much surviving on bagels, toast, muffins, crackers, Preggie Pops, etc.  Oh, and the occasional salad when I can force myself to swallow it.

This morning I left a msg for the nurse at my dr's office to call me back; I wonder if I need some type of protein/iron supplements (in case this continues)?  I haven't heard back yet, and wonder if any of you have had the same situation and/or conversation with your docs?  TIA for any input.

FWIW, I'm also going to talk with the nurse about Zofran (which I had during my first pg).

  • First time being pregnant, I definitely had that problem.  I tried to eat nuts and peanut butter and stuff like that.  But I pretty much survived on grilled cheese and OJ for 8 weeks.  My doctor was okay with it since it didn't last past 1st tri.  I did take Zofran, but it didn't really help so much with the meat thing.  Just being able to eat in general.

  • YES - I had this aversion for the last couple of weeks, but thankfully it's subsided.  It came on after my fruit and veggie aversion mostly abated.  I found that soup (with meat in tiny chunks) was edible.  Cheese and milk products also went down well.  Just find other ways to get protein - soy, milk products, protein powder (make shakes), etc...

I talked to my doctor about it and she told me to just keep eating what I could eat when I could eat.  Since I was able to get sufficient protein in and my prenatal has iron, I didn't need supplements.  She recommended that I try to think out of the box and get protein, veggies and fruit in ways that I could stomach.  I never got to the point of needing V8 (as I figured out the veggie soup thing worked), but I would have tried it if that hadn't worked!

ETA: Oh, and a lot of green leafy veggies (kale, spinach, etc...) have iron in them.

  • I didn't eat meat the entire first trimester, essentially, and I rarely want it now.

I've been surviving on carbs and sugar and maybe red meat if I can stand the idea. My doc monitored my weight and wasn't overly worried. He said to just eat what I could.

  • I didn't have a ton of nausea with DD, but I did have a really strong meat aversion.  I was basically vegetarian for my 1st tri with her.  My doc wasn't really concerned because he said my prenatals would cover it.  I did have to try and get protein in other ways, because I would be so hungry otherwise.  Eggs, cheese, peanut butter helped me feel fuller.
  • I'm a vegetarian, so I've been in a routine of having a PB&J sandwich on whole wheat bread (protein from the PB & bread) with a big glass of 1% chocolate milk (more protein) for lunch every day.

    PB = 7g protein per 2 tbsp

whole wheat bread = 7g protein per 2 slices

    1% milk = 8g protein per cup

So that's at LEAST 22g of protein right there (& I'm sure I use more than one serving of PB & milk).

I'm also trying to eat "fake meat" for dinner at night (which probably wouldn't help you since taste is the issue).

My problem is the opposite:  lately DH's meat is actually smelling REEEALLY good to me!  Hee hee.

  • Thank you, ladies.  I'm going to have to try peanut butter.  Even though it doesn't necessarily sound good to me, I know eggs and cheese aren't where it's at for me right now for sure.

And I'll keep with the salads, but maybe with spinach in them, instead.

Poor DH has to fend for himself and for DD for dinners for now.  Otherwise they'll be temporary vegetarians, too.

  • OH!  And I forgot about scrambled eggs with whole wheat toast!  This was a great meal for me when the m/s was on the worse end of the spectrum.

  • I wasn't able to eat meat until well into my second trimester. It didn't seem to be much of a problem. You can eat nuts, eggs, protein bars, things like that if you think you aren't getting enough protein. I didn't have any problems and I avoided meat like the PLAGUE for over half of this pregnancy!

  • I had a strong meat aversion pretty much my entire pregnancy with DD and rarely, if ever ate it. Oddly enough, she despises meat herself and is pretty much a vegetarian.

I am having the same aversion this time but I try to eat a lot of dairy. I crave nuts and beans and can tolerate eggs as well.

Ditto all of this except meat does NOT smell good to me.  I never really liked or disliked the smell of it before.  It didn't bother me at all.  Now, the sight or smell of meat sends me over the deep end.  It's bad.

  • I couldn't do red meat my first pregnancy (oddly, I had no m/s, just the food aversion).  This pregnancy I have had a really hard time with chicken and fish, even now in 2nd tri.

  • I had a red meat aversion my entire pg with DD. It was awful since it was grilling season and I LOVE steaks.

I ate nothing but burgers when I was in the hospital after having her.

I never needed supplements, but I did eat a lot of peanut butter and cheese.
