My husband got a promotion that is moving us up to Minneapolis. We are looking at houses in near Chaska, Shakopee, and Eden Prarie. My in-law lice in Chanhassen so we would like to be close by so that we can take advantage of having family close by, something we don't have down here. Can you tell me about those areas?
I will also be a SAHM at least until the baby is born as nobody in their right mind would hire someone who is 6+ months pregnant and about to go on leave. Are there any cheap/free activities or play groups that you know if in the area that I can do with DS? Is there a Bump group in the area that does GTG? It took forever for us to find a good group of firends down here. I hate having to start over, but I'm looking forward to a new adventure!
TIA!
Re: Moving to the Minneapolis area...
Congrats on your DH's promotion! Chaska and Eden Prairie are both very nice areas. Shakopee is okay, but a bit further from Minneapolis and fun things to do. We're in Minnetonka, which I love. It's also close to Chanhassen. DD will be in Hopkins schools, which have a great reputation.
Minnesota has a great Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program. I think the classes are on a sliding scale, so your fee depends on income. I just signed DD up for a baby storytime through the Eden Prairie library, and that was free.
There is an Eden Prairie bumpie who frequently organizes GTGs. I'm sure she can tell you more.
If you're looking for an OB in MN, I can highly recommend Ob/Gyn West. They have offices in Minnetonka and Eden Prairie.
Good luck with your move!
Welcome!
I live in the EP area. We love it! It was ranked the best place in the US to live by Money Magazine this yr.
It's super cold and snowy right now but the summers are beautiful. Lots of parks, lakes, recreation.
I would rec EP out of the burbs listed. Chan is right next door and very nice - just further out, Chaska is even further out. Might also consider Minnetonka. I would skip Shakopee.
Ditto pps on ObGyn West - they are awesome, That is who I used when I was pg.
I have a son almost the same age as yours!
Let me know if you have any other questions - you can send me a pm or I check this board often.
I've heard about ECFE but the website doesn?t give much information in regards to classes that are offered. How does it work?
My MIL recommended Dr. Johnson at OBGYN West. I'll have to give them a call. What hospital would I deliver at? That's one of the things I'm worried about. I delivered DS at a women and babies hospital. My labor and delivery was a breeze and I'm so scared it will be harder at a regular hospital. I'm sure this is just in my head, but I have convinced myself that the epi is sure to fail if I don't deliver at a special hospital.
We live in EP and love it. We looked at homes all over the west Metro when we first moved here from CA and loved EP. Minnetonka is also worth looking at, although we found it to be hit or miss.
I can't tell you much about OBGYN's in the area as mine was up on the north side of the metro.
As far as GTG's, we have a once a month GTG at the Minnesota Zoo. There's always something going on, whether it's an actual GTG or not. Keep checking this board out and you'll see stuff. There's also a great story time at the library that a few of us go to.
Congrats on the baby and the move and welcome to Minnesota. It's the best move DH and I ever made!
Hi I also live in EP & am a SAHM. There are a lot of fun things to do around here. I have not done it yet but I will be signing up my son for a ECFE class in Minnatanka come spring.
When will you be moving up here?
We love the EP library story time but just know that they are hard to get into so you have to sign up for them right away, when are you moving up here?
Feel free to keep asking questions & once you are up here come and join one of our GTGs it's a great way to get out and meet people (plus with the zoo gtg most the time you get in for free those of us with memberships have free passes)
DH starts his new position 3/1. DS and I will be up there by the 11th because I'll be 30 weeks then. It's all kind of up in the air becuase we have to sell our house here and find one up there. Crazy!
The zoo sounds like a lot of fun. Is it indoors or do you just get used to doing things in the snow? I was born and raised in TX then moved to FL. The cold is going to take some getting used to!
Some of it is indoors (when it's cold outside we only go to the inside part). You will get used to doing stuff in the snow but even someone who has live in MN her whole life hates going out in this cold.
You really do get used to the weather. Of course, I'm one of those crazy people that loves the cold. There's plenty of indoor activities in the winter, as well as outdoor for those days that aren't so bad. And then there's summer...
The move sounds crazy! Are you guys doing it alone or do you have help? Moving out of state was hard enough when I wasn't pregnant. I can't imagine doing it pregnant! We moved into a different city when I was about 7 months and I though I was going to die!
We live in Chaska and really like the area. I don't think it's as "far" out of the metro as some might think. With Hwy 212 it is really quick. We have family in Shakopee and there are some areas that seems very nice, some that I'm not sure of. Sounds like you already have an OB in mind, but I really like mine at Western OB (I think they have offices in Chan, Chaska and Waconia), Dr. Weinrich. I delivered at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia and had a great experience. We also love our pedi, so if you want that rec, just let me know. GL to you and your family!
Ob/Gyn West delivers at Fairview Southdale in Edina. DD was born there and spent 23 days in the Special Care Nursery. We were very pleased with the care there. I believe OGW is also going to start doing deliveries at Ridgeview Hospital in Waconia, which would be a smaller facility.
Everyone keeps telling my how great the summer is. I guess it will be nice to not have to deal with 100+ heat for 5 months every year.
We have done this moving thing before but last time we moved from our one bedroom in college with no kids. Now were moving an entire house, a 9 month old, and a dog cross country while pregnant. Thank God the company is moving us so I won't have to pack or unpack anything but selling the house and finding a place to live up there before the baby arrives in May is going to be hell. To top it off the corporate housing we have up there is a one bedroom apartment. I don't know how we are going to make that work but I guess we'll figure it out!
Eek! When we moved from CA we drove straight through with our two dogs. That was hell.
Thankfully you've got someone doing the work for you. I know it sucked when we moved from our rental home here to our current home. If you need any real estate recs, we're friends with a few.
