How to fit in exercise?

How do you working mom's find time to exercise?  I'm working on losing all this baby weight and I know just watching what I eat is not enough.  I'm tracking my calories and have only lost 5 lbs. in 3 weeks.  The challenge is trying to find time to exercise.

My current schedule has me up at 5:30am and home at 4:30pm.  Then it's dinnertime for Stella, then bathtime, play a bit and then the girls go down to bed at 7pm.  By that time I'm freakin' exhausted and end up cleaning up, doing dishes, doing laundry and then crash on the couch.

I need to make time to exercise.  How do you ladies do it?

Re: How to fit in exercise?

  • When I was still working out, DH and I took turns - each night after dinner and bath, one of us would put Toodle to sleep, the other would work out (so usually the workout was around 8 pm). DH does the dishes every night which I know makes me the luckiest girl ever. Otherwise, I would straighten the house after working up, but only took about 5-10 minutes since I am super Type A and clean pretty much every time I walk through a room.

On weekends, weather permitting, we go on walks/jogs together with Toodle in the stroller.

  • DH & I have pre-arranged days after work that we are "allowed" to go exercise. If we decide to go that that day, then the other person takes care of the night time bath, bedtime routine. I work from home 2x a week so it helps me to not miss her as much on those days when I work out b/c I know I will get a longer time with her on my telework & non-workout days.

Yeah, that's my problem.  I know DH would be fine if I take off to work out once we're home.  I just hate the thought of not seeing my girls every day.  I think I may just try to do the 30 Day Shred at home while Stella is eating dinner or something like that.

  • I am struggling with the same issue.  I have a treadmill at home, which I thought would make it easier than having to go to the gym.   The few times I have actually exercised, I went straight to the machine after putting DS to bed.  I have found that if I stray to do chores, or sit down, I never make it.
  • I'm with you.  I know DH would take over the bath/bedtime routine - but I'd just hate to miss it.  As it is, we usually do those things together, which is totally unnecessary and doesn't make us as productive as possible - but we both enjoy the time with DS.

Anyway, no answers for you.  By the time DS is in bed, it's 9:00, I finish a quick pick-up, and I'm exhausted.  Let me know if you find a trick!

  • What about on your lunch break?  Even a brisk walk outside would be good...doesn't really have to be a "workout," per se.

  • I don't is the answer.  If you figure it out, let me know.  ;)  But seriously, I have a treadmill at home and a gym membership and neither get used.  I know I just have to get in the routine of doing so and taking turns with DH.  Good luck!

  • I've had a lot of trouble with this myself and I only have a 1/2 hour for lunch, so it's made the lunch thing not possible. However, we get two scheduled 15 minute breaks at work (which I previously never took) and recently a group of my coworkers started doing a few exercise videos in our big staff multi-purpose room. I know it sounds hokey but honestly, I feel like I'm actually doing SOMETHING for 30 minutes a day rather than doing absolutely nothing. I don't know if this is a possibility for you but I think it's worth it.

  • The only time I can figure out to workout is after DS goes to bed.  But that is our unwind and connect with each other time (not to mention chores and stuff...ugh).  Anyways, DH and I got an xbox kinect with the hopes that we could work out after he goes to bed...or at least play an active game with each other, rather than sitting around, watching tv.  we were doing pretty well with that until I got hit with a nasty cold...we need to get back on the horse!
  • I am not back at work yet but it's still very hard to fit it in.  I tried getting up before the boys but sometimes Jacob gets up at 4:30 so that didn't work.  I bought a treadmill and workout after both kids are sleeping and take one class at the gym on Saturdays.  I've lost all the baby weight but not the 10lbs of "IF" weight.  I used to work out 2 hrs per day and that's not going to happen so I think these 10lbs are here to stay.  DH was working out too but is so tired he falls asleep early.
