Babywearers -some q's

So...I have a velcro baby, and he's tipping the scales at 20 pounds.  needless to say, after a long, clingy weekend, I'm dying today.  My back and arms hurt.  I tried my moby for a while, but he's too heavy and its too stretchy.  I have a bjorn, but I'd rather use a wrap of some sort so that he feels more secure to me.

Can you give me any suggestions for what might work well for a bigger baby and not be super expensive?

Re: Babywearers -some q's

  • are you wearing him facing forward? i read on one of the babywearing websites to not wear a baby over 15 lbs facing forward as their head and limbs pull away from your body causing you to hunch forward. that made a world of difference for me.

i still use the k'tan in the house and for short periods of time (like if i am out and about with both of them and one gets fussy). i got an ergo last week and LOVE it. it definitely is pricey but i wore theo for 3 plus hours one day and my back did not hurt at all and he is just shy of 20lbs.

  • Abby, I just bought my first woven wrap a couple weeks ago, and I LOVE it! Its a Girasol, which is a good beginner wrap from all that I have ready. Front or back, she feels practically weightless. I like wrapping her on my back when we are doing things around the house. I can hardly tell she is back there, it is so supportive.

There are TONS of instructional videos on youtube on how to wrap babies. I learned in no time flat. DD loves to be on my back. She will even fall asleep back there.

Go check out TheBabyWearer.com. They have tons of info, and their For Sale or Trade forum is a great place to get broken in wraps for a lot cheaper than brand new. That's where I got my Girasol from, and will probably always buy from there. FB me if you want more info.

you know what, I was wearing him facing out when I was wearing him...never thought about center of gravity...just that I figured he would like to look around more Stick out tongue  Makes a ton of sense!  Looking into Ergos now...guessing that would be the wiser investment since DH won't even think about wearing a wrap...but he would do an ergo.

Thanks Kate!  For some reason, I like the idea of wraps while in the house...I have no idea why it feels weird to me to wear a structured carrier IN the house, but it does!  Thanks for the link!!
  • I always felt weird about wearing a structured carrier in the house too. I have one of those that I bought for DH, but she doesn't like it much. I wore her in my ring sling for about 6 months and now the wrap, and she prefers those hands down to the other one. A lot of carrier choices have to do with baby preferences as well.

  • I have a Beco Gemini and I love it!

I can wear DD (she's about 16 pounds) on my front or back and barely even notice.  I often wear her on my back while I do housework and she usually falls asleep.  I still do a front carry when we go out.

The Gemini allows you to cross the straps in the back for a front carry, which I think gives more support.

You can also do a forward-facing carry, which is great for short periods, like if I need to quickly fold a load of diapers when we get home at night before I have DH's extra hands.  She likes to see what I'm doing!  I don't forward-face for long periods of when we go out, but I think it's a helpful option to have.

I might try a wrap this spring/summer when we don't have to go out of the house in 92 layers of clothes!

  • I have a Babyhawk and love it.  We have been using it since she was about 7 months old.  It's reversable so there is one cutesy side for me and if dh wears he he just flips it around to the sold brown side.

  • I tried out a friend's Scootababy And LOVED it. He sits in the position I usually carry him in so he's comfortable and he can look forward or back and still easily look up at you. Being off to the side also keeps his greedy little hands out of the way! It distributes the weight so well I could hardly feel him.

  • LOVE my Babyhawk mei tei.  Jude loves to do back carries with it, I think it makes him feel like a big boy.  :)  Up until about a year, I was a big fan of doing hip carries with my ring sling also.  I know serious babywearers really get into woven wraps like Didymos when their LO gets to toddler stage, but I don't have any experience with those yet.  GL!

  • Thanks ladies!!  Looks like I am not likely to get out of this for under $100, huh?  sigh.  Well..I would easily spend that at the chiro or on massage to fix this..so I guess it is worth it!  Stick out tongue
  • I do think (at least for the SSCs) that you get what you pay for - I have never heard people complain about the Ergos, Becos, etc., but no one likes the Bjorns, etc.  I use my Beco a lot at stores now because she is less wiggly in it than if I am carrying her.

  • I still use my K'tan with lo at 20lbs and we do mostly the Hug position (which is facing in and similar to the way baby would sit in the ergo). i think having baby facing in can be a factor for some people - especially if you wear baby all day. if i have ds on me all day i will usually switch between positions - so hug when sleepy, adventure for a bit if he want to look around...
